We've all had the rig that was thrown in the tackle locker after not being dried the way it should be and not seen for a short period. Then when you pull it out, the hook is discolored, not flaky rust, but discolored.
While fishing with a friend recently, we had a small blue wanting to commit hari-kari and after a five minute battle, the hook snapped at the start of the bend at the shank.
I looked at what was left of the hook and the metal didn't seem like it was eaten away, just brown around the outside. He said it wasn't flaky when he rigged it and offered it, and has used hooks worse looking than that.
