2 New Tiagra 80WA - Spool them with???

    Hey there fellas!

I'm getting ready for another new season!

I bought 2 new Tiagra 80WA and got to thinking about all the different comments you all have made over the past few months!

SOOOO... what should it be, Mono or Braid, and what poundage would you go with?

I was thinking 100lb Braid (load the spool), topshot w/ wind on leader 200 feet of mono... Thoughts?

Most of my fishing is offshore Maryland, VA & NC.

wouldnt 100lb braid require 1500 yards or something?

The next bite on a jig.
200lb hollow jerry brown backing with 130 sufix superior top shot. If you will be using them for smaller yellowfins, you could go with 100lb top shot.

Whacha setting up-- Blue Marlin or planner?
Blue Marlin--- load it up with 100 lb Ande and you are good to go. Of course, there is always 80 lb line that will fit on an 80 lb reel.
My thoughts are this-- an 80 is too big and heavy for stand up so you'll be in the chair. Put the brakes on him as much as you can-- no finese--- crank that drag down to 22-25 lbs and wear him out.
I'd be afraid to guess what a spooled up reel with braid would cost

Depends on what you're targeting, but just for regular trolling I would start with 100lb. dacron(several hundred yards),then connect 80lb.-100lb. mono to dacron and fill reel. You can add a top shot of your choice or go straight to swivel or wind on leader. All you have to change is the mono when you're ready. Braid is fine in place of the dacron if you want, but I never have many problems with it personally. It's a hell of a lot cheaper.

I would use 100 pound Ande, then whatever the topshot of your choice, Probably a windon leader of 130-150 Florocarbon, for big Feeshes I would use 300 Floro, for sharks 500 extra hard.
But you cannot go wrong with Ande!!!

    Thumbs up

SKIP THE ANDE USE 200 JB HOLLOW CORE TO A 200' 100LB SUFIX TOPSHOT ANDE HAS TOO MANY IMPERFECTIONS IN IT. The braid will last longer drag less throgh the water plus when the mono get's chalky just toss out the mono and re spool the mono. also the added yardage that the thinner diameter gets you. good luck!

I'd go with 100# Momoi, but this is going to become a ford/chevy thing so use the brand you like if you go with mono.

I have heard that you need to remove dacron backing periodically (annual or so) to clean the spool to make sure it does not hold moisture and damage (corrode) the alum spool. I have dacron backing on my planer reel and wondering if I need to do this. You guys who use the dacron backing and just change out top-shots, does this need to be done and have you had any problems with the dacron? Thanks in advance.
