Penn 80VSW Handle Removal

Hi Guys,

Does anyone know how to remove the handle for the 80VSW? No visible screws, schematic shows a "Shift Button Retainer" so thinking this is the place to start. Though not sure how this comes off, pop off or threaded. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Hi....on any new style VS Shifting system you need two wrenches to remove the handle properly without stripping anything.Tough thing is that Penn only supplies you with one when you purchase the reel new......Don't ask!!....One slips underneath the silver collar that you would turn to shift to low to high gear.There are two flat sides where this wrench slides into.This holds that collar in place while you would take the second wrench that falls fully around the silver shift collar and turn counter clockwise to remove the shifting button itself. Once you do that....the fun really begins !! There is at least 5 more parts to remove before the handle will fully come off.Not the easiest thing to do by far.Question....if it's a new reel,why are you removing the handle? Are you replacing it with a after market handle? Reason I ask is,Penn's policy states that if you're disassembling a reel,it could void your warranty if something is lost or breaks in the process.Best advice....send it in to the factory and let us take care of it for you.If it's not working correctly for you,as long as there is a proof of purchase or sales receipt,it will not cost you anything.Or most most times if you just need a handle changed over to a after market one,we'll cover that for you too.Give me a call if you'd like about this problem or any other question you may have about a Penn product.

Tom,

Thanks for the information, I would have never figured it out w/o damaging it. Yes the reel is only 6 months old but need to remove handle to install an electramate 1380G. Directions that come with electramate only state "remove handle only", no further explanations or illustrations.

When you say to take the second wrench and place over the silver shift collar, is that the "Shift Button Retainer", p/n 110C030VS?

Yes it is,that's the part that we're talking about....It needs to secured in tandem with the other wrench to start the removal of the handle.We have a special wrench made for us in Penn.In it's place a set of pliers that has rubber or a rag wrapped around it's teeth to prevent damage to the collar should work,but be careful.

Don't know if the 80VSW is the same as the 50VSW? I have a few 50's (new in '06- it was the last model year before the NEWEST design~ the drag indicating bar does NOT have the visible black plastic bar)~

Q about applying grease to the reel handle grip (I have one reel where the big plastic grip doesn't spin freely)~ figure it's time to take a look inside- add some grease

How do I pop that small black oval off the handle face? Maybe that's where a stop nut is located?

Hello Brian...... How are you? The oiler that we're talking about can be removed pretty easy.A small punch can be inserted into the hole and with side leverage,start to push up and around till it pops out for you.Look down in the hole and you'll find that you can use a slotted screwdriver to hold that end for removal of the handle from the handle blank.Any questions,please feel free to contact me.

My 50VSWs have the smaller type- push buttons
