Okuma is JUNK! Avets are very solid reels for the money. Holwachagot

I used an Okuma for two albacore pretty recently that a buddy of mine was using. Wasn't bad, held up to 8-10 fish across the course of the trip, seemed pretty smooth.

That said? With Okumas at the exact same price as Shimano TLD's, and, in the case of 50W, $100 less than the comparable Avet?

Okuma's not the reel you want to buy.

I would have to agree with everyone here, put your money into something better...remeber you are making an investment here, not just a purchase...get good quality gear that will last.

I do reel repairs and have worked on some okumas...they have some good quality features but they also cut some corners in other features that ruin the overall quality and value of the reel, making them not worth the money in the long run.

Just my $.02 worth.

I worked for a retailer who sold quite a few of the Okumas, particularly the silver series. I would say that while they had a much higher percentage of failure out of the box, the ones that manufactured well held up and the ones that weren't broke while spooling up. They won't compare to Tiagras and Avets but for the silver series, the price doesn't either. I know of a few charter boats that were using them up here and they had good success with them. They seemed to me to be a quality low-end product that held up pretty well, though I wouldn't want to be holding one when a grander showed up at the transom.

I think Okuma has made some good strides in the last couple years. I have a TS50, Silver series, that I got on ebay for $50. I figured it was worth a shot at that price!!! I have been satisfied with it. I think it performs well...not quite as well as a Tiagra or Int. but I wouldn't stub my nose at it.
