Penn 4/0, Penn 6/0, Shimano TLD 20, Avet (model? - they are all good),
It really all depends on what "larger" fish means and the lb. test you plan on fishing. |

spinning reel....any Penn 650, 750, 850SS. For legendary reliability, can't go wrong with a Daiwa BG. Shimano Baitrunner's are good, as are the Shimano Spheros.
Obviously, I'm considering cost when suggesting these. What budget do you have? |

the sargus is a nice reel. i have a 5000 and i have a 7000 on order. that combo you mentioned with the ugly stick should be fine. personally, i'd go with 20# mono or at most, 25#. it only holds 240 yards of 25, so if you go to 30#, you're really gonna be compromising line capacity. if offshore and you hook a sail or big dolphin, you're going to want as much line as possible. all of my offshore spinners are spooled with 20# ande pink, and i've never lost a fish (sails, tuna, dolphin) to line breakage. if you really really need to go with 30# mono, consider doing a backing of braided line to gain capacity.

so if i hook up with a dolphin you think i will be good with 20lb test ? how about the length of the rod i think 7' might be a tad to long i was looking at the 6'6 what do you think ? what do you use ?

i think 20lb test is fine for most of your general needs. i've caught 28# blackfin tuna, 30# dolphin, 60-80# sailfish, and large tarpon with 20lb test. i also use it for alot of my bottom fishing when going for red grouper, muttons, etc... it also depends on how you fight the fish, of course.
almost every one of my spinning rods is 7 foot. just the other day, i acquired some 6'6 ones that i'll probably put either a BG60 or Sargus7000 on, with 20lb test and use as all purpose offshore rods. pitch bait for mahi, sails, etc. but i think 6'6 or 7 should be fine. |
