Finally fished the kayak!
A new friend who kayak fishes often had the day off yesterday and decided he would take on the task of getting me on some water with a pole in my hand in the tandam . We fished near the HRBT, making a launch at 0930. I hooked into a ray fairly quickly. Yeah, trash fish, but the little guy, maybe 3 foot wing tip to wing tip, was a blast for the first fight on the yak. Actually moved uas through the water at a prety good clip as I got the hang of things. The Croaker and short Flounder kept us pretty busy all day. My friend got the hang of giving me clock directions to cast in, how to get me to cast the distance he wanted me to. (Anyone watching would have thought us to be nuts as we did this by casting at bridge pilings. LOL) The good news is that for all his efforts, my buddy was rewarded with a slot size Puppy Drum as we were heade back at 1730. All in all, it was a great day, and I think the kayak will give me some great fishing times!! |

Thanks guys!
I'm only planning to put a fish finder/GPS unit in for now. (Safety reason for the GPS, figure the second seater, person at the tiller, can find our way home if the weather socks us. Plus the alarms of off course and such would help me if they wee incapacitated for some reason. The fish finer is, besides the obvisou, because my wife isn't that big into catching fish, but she is into their habits and is a technogeek, so it is to encourage her into taking me out to catch some.) I am so anxious to get the damn thing put in! I have the Humminbird 687 and the battery unit ready to install! While I have your ears, I have a question. I'm wanting to use some lures while I'm out there. (the Mirage Drive System seems like a great way to troll...), but I'm a bit concerned about all those treble hooks. Not being able to see them, and so little space in a yak... I know that some folks replace the trebs with single J hooks, but I was thinking of going one step further and just replacing them with a single Jat either the tail or midsection, but not both. Which would you think be the place to have the one hook? More fish hit the middle/front or the tail of a lure? (I'm going to be chasing inshore fish here in VA... Not ready to take the yak offshore just yet... LOL) |

Congrats by the way on getting on the water, and happy 4th July,go on the tail every time, helps lure to swim better, acts like a "real" tail, if you use plastics then go middle of body, the plastics have an action built in, and good luck
