Royal Star Braid 15 day trip 1-22

We got our annual Braid 15-day off to a decent start today in beautiful flat calm weather. The overall sign of tuna down here was as impressive as the last few trips but they sure made us work at it to get a bite. Our tally was 17 fish from 70-170lbs which by normal standards is a fine day. With plenty of time and more beautiful weather in the forecast, I'm confident we'll get our shots. Today's shot shows Marius Coetzee who came all the way from South Africa to best this 160lber.

We started out the day right hooking three big cows, one of which gained its freedom while the other two weighed in at 264 and 243. Unfortunately the rest of the day didn't go as well but we did scratch another handfull of 120-160lbers. The sign is still here and the weather continues to hold so we have no intentions of going anywhere. Larry Ward poses with his 264 in today's shot, the fish to beat so far.

Real deal cow fishing here today that started with a good morning bite and culminated with a ripper at dark on straight jumbos with five heavy cows hanging at once. We ended up with 35 fish, most of which were 110-195 with seven from 205-298. We did suffer a few casualties on the cows but overall this veteran Braid group did a great job of using the right gear and working together. Needless to say we're looking forward to the next four days and are hoping to keep up the pace. Our shots today show Hot Bobby and Marius Coetzee with a pair of deuces and John Cox who raised the bar with a 298.

Not quite the caliber of action we had yesterday but still a great day of cow angling in flat calm weather. We ended up with 22 fish highlighted by six that made it over the magic number from 205-270lbs. The overall grade is incredible with the stock grade being 110-190lbs which puts the average at about 160lbs. Hoping we can keep it up for the next three days. Today's shot shows Bruce Lozekar and Mark Bower with a pair of 250lbers taken out of our sundown bite.

Classic big fish angling here today with a shot in the morning and sundown while midday was very slow. We put twenty fish in the RSW for the day from 110-185 with two at 230 and a 305. Larry Ward who has been fishing down here since the Bill poole days landed the giant which ended his forty year quest to boat a three hundred pounder. Today's shot shows Larry with his trophy.

A condition change made for much slower fishing today but we stil put a few nice fish aboard highlighted by a 276. We have another full day and a morning so hopefully the current gets straightened out tomorrow. Today's shot shows Jack West's 276 coming through the gate.

We started the morning with a nice scratch on 100-190lb fish but unfortunately the two cows we hooked were unintentionally released. After a slow midday we got back in the saddle and put together a nice afternoon on 130-170lbers with a couple jumbos that weighed in at 281 and 338. This has been a cow fishermans dream with numerous shots at big fish just about every day. Tomorrow will be our last morning so hopefully we can top off our last well with a couple cows before we leave for home. Bruce Helton is in today's shot with his 338.

We finished up the trip in fine style this morning with an incredible bite on straight cows that saw another seven hit the deck from 205-281. There were a few 150-190 mixed in also but the majority of the fish around us at daylight were 200lb plus. Mackerel on the heavy gear was the way to go with many of the bites coming within feet of the boat. Today we have a rare shot of the seven cows, more pictures to follow as we travel up the line.
Our final tally on the big fish was 26 over 200 and 2 over 300, following is a list of the anglers who boated them.

    Dennis Braid 205
    Jack West 276,267
    Kohei Kikuchi 281,243,208
    Mark Bower 252
    Alfredo Salgado 238
    John Cox 298,252,203
    Bruce Lozekar 246,211
    Michael Green 205
    Art Nolen 240,211
    David Green 215
    Martin Rudolph 217
    Tim Wilson 204
    Bruce Helton 338,231
    Hot Bobby 281,256
    Larry Ward 305,254,213
    Marius Coetzee 232,216

Our seemingly endless nice weather officially came to an end yesterday with thirty knots of wind and unruly seas. The good news is that it is beautiful this morning and looks to stay this way until we hit the point at around 1230hrs tomorrow. Thirty six hours of tough weather on a 15-day trip I'll take anytime. Tim will depart again the 9th on our first tagging trip of the year so look for his reports following departure.
Our final two shots show Kohei kikuchi and Hot Bobby with their 281lbers.

So far so good on the weather as we make our way up the line catching up on some much needed rest and relaxation, a great time to reflect back on an epic trip that saw some of the best cow fishing I've seen down below. The magnitude of some of the bites we had on straight cows was intense and will provide memories for life. Today's shot shows John Cox with the biggest of his three cows, a 298 taken on a sardine.
