    Excel Merrittl 6 day trip

    Beginning of Excel's Merritt Trip

We just made our first stop and according to Justin, "We are starting where the last trip left off. So far we have about 50 Bluefin and 10 or so Yellowtail so far this morning." Justin went on to say "Things are still looking good, not to mention the weather is absolutely flat calm so everyone is having a great time."

Excel checks in again on August 15

Around 3:30 PM, Justin checked in to give us an update. "We ended up with 85 Bluefin, and 55 Yellowfin on a hard drift. We drifted with the same school all day, he guys had a good day we decided to throw in the towel for for today and start sliding down towards the Islands. We'll check back in tomorrow".

Excel Started at the Islands Today

Justin called in to give an update on their Merritt Trip. "Everything started out well in the morning. The Yellows started out nice but it didn't take long for the Sea Lions to get on to our game. They started eating fish, they ate roughly half of what we were hooking and it just wasn't working out so we decided to move.

We headed off shore looking for a pocket of clean water outside the islands and it worked out. We got out here and found a very good sign of Yellowtail. It didn't take long to get fixed up on these things. It is a nice strain of Yellowtail, I'd say 18 to 22 lbs. with a few bigger ones mixed in. Everyone it tired out now and they are down there having cocktails, thinking about what we are going to do tomorrow. It looks like we are going to slide down and get to that warm water just above the Ridge. We'll see if we can find some Yellowfin Tuna for these guys to catch."

Anyway Justin will keep us informed so look for an additional update or two tomorrow.

Update from the Excel on August 18.

Justin checked in with toadys report, "We are just above the Ridge, there is some really warm water down there, around 78 degrees. But not much fishing just yet, it is only a matter of time until that stuff starts moving up. Looks good, good set up up there it is only a matter of time.

Today we rolled back up to the Islands, we kind of goofed around on the lee of the Islands. We got a spot with some good Yellowtail fishing and some good Calico Bass fishing. We are currently heading on up the line looking for tuna tomorrow, we are all loaded up with Yellowtail. I think everybody got their limit. We will be back at Fisherman's Landing on Saturday. The guys are having a good time the weather has been really nice we'll check in when we finish up our trip.

xcel AM Report August 19 -- Good Yellowfin Bite

    Trapped 'Tail Tops

Justin Fleck brought Excel home to Fisherman's Landing August 20. He tied the boat off, unloaded and weighed the fish on the certified scales at the top of the dock. "We're getting high speed internet on the boat today," said Justin. This should help us to get our reports out.

Chartermaster Brad Merritt remarked, "Justin and the crew got us on the fish. Yesterday we had to leave 'em biting."

Wayne Wilcox of Downey won first place for a 28.2-pound yellowtail. There were bigger yellowfin and bluefin in the catch but those who caught them failed to enter the jackpot. Wayne got his with a Fish Trap swim bait in red and green, on 30-pound Izorline, a Triton 15 reel and a Calstar 6465 H rod.

Erik Johnson of Benicia won second place for a 25.9-pound yellowfin tuna, and Aaron Lerer of San Diego won third place for a 25.2-pound yellowtail.
