    Braid Products 16 day trip

    [ added November 27, 2010 ]

    Hello Anglers,

We departed yesterday on our annual Braid Products 16 day trip. Just about everybody was on board the night before for Jason's Thanksgiving Feast on the Excel, which has become quite the popular event. Since everyone was here, we were able to get an early jump and leave the dock around 0630, get our bait, and clear the point by 0930. We have a good mix of passengers from veteran "Long Rangers" to first timers wanting to see what a long range trip is all about. For the next couple of days, we will be traveling south preparing our gear. There will be a couple of seminars to give a little bit of info on what to expect and what to have ready. As of right now, the weather is beautiful for the ride down and we hope it stays like this for a while. Wish us luck.... JUSTIN

We have spent the past two days making final preparations with our gear getting ready to start fishing. Our eta to the bank is 0400 tomorrow morning. The weather has come up a little but the forecast looks favorable for when we start to fish. Wish us luck.... JUSTIN

Fishing here at the bank we began to pick up the pace. After a day and a morning, we managed to pick up 23 better grade tuna and a dozen skin. The tuna are mostly 80-160 pounds with a few bigger. James Hassen caught the first cow of the trip weighing in at 256.6 pounds. Shin Song of New Jersey boated the second cow tipping the scale at 258 pounds. Both fish were hooked on skipjacks. We left the bank mid morning and are now heading to the island to try our hand at that. Our eta is 0500 tomorrow.

We had a fantastic day here fishing bird schools out off the island. Most of the fish were in the 100-120 pound range with a few bigger ones mixed in. Although we definitely could see some cows swimming around the boat, I don't think we ever hooked one; maybe tomorrow. Our best hit was right at dark where everyone who had a bait in the water was bit. The weather has backed all the way off so we will drift out here tonight and hopefully do it all again tomorrow. Clarion Island Buffer Zone and Congratulations!

    [ added December 04, 2010 ]

    Hello Anglers,

The past two days have been great here in the Clarion Island Buffer Zone with steady fishing on 100-190 pound tuna. The weather has been holding for us making it easy to locate these bird schools out 6-10 miles off the island. Some stops you only hook one or two fish and other ones you bend the whole boat. One things for sure, these guys are having a blast. Here are some pictures from yesterday and today. On a side note; long time Excel chef, and brother, Jason and wife Hillary had their first child this morning. Their baby girl weighed in at 6lbs. 6 oz. Congratulations! JUSTIN

The action continues here at the island with long drifts on spots of breaking fish. It's been a real treat to have this consistent fishing here, it gets everyone at the rail and keeps them busy. Everyone has plenty of fish in the hatch now so most people have been releasing everything under 150 pounds. Dennis Braid has even started a release contest for some excellent prizes. We are going to give it another go tomorrow. JUSTIN

We had another excellent bite early yesterday on good grade tuna. Throughout the bite, most people were releasing their fish because they were under the 200 pound mark which made me realize that they were ready for a change. We left the island and are heading up to the lower banks to try for a giant for the next couple of days. Today was spent traveling up in flat calm weather. The gang took advantage of the good ride by going through all of their gear to make sure there were no weak spots in their tackle. Hopefully luck is on our side and we can pick off a few big ones. Keep your fingers crossed..... JUSTIN

We spent a day and a morning on the lower banks with not much to report. Although the fish is still around and boils next to the boat all day, it is very hard to get a bite. After boating just a couple of fish, we threw in the towel and started heading up the line toward San Diego. Our eta is 0630 on Sunday morning. JUSTIN

Looks like an awesome trip right there. What a work out that's gotta be doing battle with Big Tuna day and night.
