Excel Brad Merritt 10 day charter 11-2

    Wednesday, November 2

    and away we go....

Hello Anglers, Today we departed on our annual Brad Merritt 10 day charter. We have lots of familiar faces on board and are eager to get to work trophy hunting. We cleared Point Loma around 1200 in calm seas. We have a great load of sardines, and are making our way south. After a quick safety seminar, passengers are keeping busy rigging up their tackle, using the internet, and telling fish stories. Jason and Richie are busy as well preparing tonights cuisine: Grilled NY steak, potatoes, and asparagus. And don't forget the German Chocolate cake for dessert Wish us luck. Justin

Travel & Tuna Day Report from the Excel, November 3, 2011

Justin Fleck called in with this report from the Excel, "We just got done wrapping up our first day, which pretty much designated as a "travel day". We had some seminars and spent the day rigg'n up. We got a nice surprise as we were going down and we got into an area of nice clean water with a lot of bait life. there were a lot of birds around so we went and put some trol jigs out. We were welcomed with some Yellowfin tuna in the 20 to 30 lb. range. We had a couple nice flurries on those where we got everybody out of the galley and on deck. We put together a good day with some nice sized Yellowfin. We had a nice spread of Yellowfin dinner and some nice sushi. Our game plan from here on out we are sliding down we'll be along the beach tomorrow and put ourselves in position to be on the Ridge the next day. Our target species tomorrow will be some Yellowtail, some Dorado and maybe some more tuna. We will check in again tomorrow."

Good Yellowtail day today aboard the Excel, November 4, 2011

Justin Fleck called in to tell us these things, "We had a very nice day, we started at the Islands and worked our way down south along the Baja coast. Very good Yellowtail fishing on excellent grade I'd say most of the fish weighed 18 to 25 lbs with a lot of bigger ones in there. Everybody got excited. They were biting the yoyo, biting the surface, biting the irons and biting the fly line kite. They bit anything we threw at them. It was good times, good weather. No real sign of tuna or Dorado down here just yet but very good conditions. Things look good we're sliding down working south. We'll put ourselves in position to hit the Ridge a little bit tomorrow. Hopefully we'll get some more school sized tuna maybe a Wahoo or 2 in the before we head south to be on thw lower banks for the following day. That's our plan everybody is having a good time here. We'll check in again tomorrow."

Report from the Excel at the lower banks, November 7, 2011

Justin Fleck called in this morning to give us this update from the Excel, "It is Monday morning and we got down here to the lower banks, late yesterday. It just seemed like we got here a little too late. It sounds like the guys that got here first thing had a little bit of fish established, we did manage to five fish. This morning we see fish around us, boiling around. We have one on board and we hope that things get roll'n. The weather has come up a little bit. Around 16-18 knots, but still fishable. We are hoping for a big day here and that we let us know if we are going to spend a third day here or start working our way up. We have high hopes, we have fish around us. We'll send pictures later this afternoon or first thing tomorrow. That's it we'll check in again later. Wish us luck."

    Steady pick

Hello Anglers, We put together a nice day down here on the lower banks where we were able to keep one going almost all the time. The grade of the fish were from 70 to 150 pounds today. Although most of our bites came on the kite, we did have a few opportunities on the flylined baits. Of course when ever you are fishing for this size fish you are going to experience some losses and we had our share for sure. The wind is still with us but it's quite comfortable sitting on the anchor. We are going to give it one more day down here before we start heading up the line. Wish us luck.... Justin

Report from the Excel at the Lower Banks, November 9, 2011

Justin Fleck called in with this report from the Excel, "We had another very nice day down here on the lower banks, we pretty much kept something hang'n throughout the day. At some points throughout the day we had as many as 4 or 5 going at the same time. Good steady action on these big fish. The fish we caught today were a little bigger, 140 to 192 lbs. was our biggest. We did have several fish bust off close to the boat. Caused by the rough water boat rock'n around. But that tends to happen when you are dealing with fish this size. People are happy we have a good load of these big ones on board.

"We are starting our way up the line. We'll be look'n for some Dorado offshore for the rest of the day and be up around the upper end of the Ridge tomorrow and finish off our trip. We'll send some pictures from the last few days. We'll check in again tomorrow."

    Beautiful Weather

Hello Anglers, We are heading up the line in flat calm seas. We had good fishing yesterday and added some yellowtail and dorado to our count. Today we made a few drifts for some rockfish and lingcod. Our ETA back at Fisherman's Landing is 0700 tomorrow morning. Here are some more pictures from the trip. Justin
