Mike Ramirez called in to give us an update for the Excel 8 Day Trip. Most of the time on the first day was spent on a tackle seminar and getting ready for the real fishing. Mike went on to say, "We are working our way down South, we'll be in an offshore zone this afternoon looking around for some tuna. We'll see if we have any luck there. We'll call back later to let you know how we did. Wish us luck."

Report from the Excel8 Day Trip, Oct. 19, 2011
Mike Ramirez called in to give us an update on the Excel's 8 Day Trip, "Yesterday we fished offshore and we ended up with a dozen school sized tuna. Today we worked our way down the coast, we hit several different spots. We never really got one to cooperate and we ended up with a handful of better grade Yellows despite the 18 to 25 knots of wind we had all day. It was definitely a tough day. We're going to be down on the Ridge tomorrow. Hopefully we get a little better action, a better report. Hopefully this wind dies down, we'll check back tomorrow.
Mike Ramirez called in to give us an update on the Excel, "Today was just what we needed. We started off on the Ridge, great Yellowtail fishing. Good grade Yellows, 18 to 25 pounders a couple of 30 pounders mixed in. We had steady fishing for several hours this morning. I think everybody got their fill. Then we picked away at the Bluefin, that was a nice surprise. They ran at 18 to 30 lbs. We'll be here tomorrow. We have great weather and we'll try to do the whole thing over agin tomorrow.

Mike Ramirez called in to give us an update from the Excel, "Today was another good day on the Ridge. We started off with steady Yellowtail action. After everybody got their fill of those, we pulled the anchor and we were able to jig up a handful of nice quality Wahoo. We are currently on our way to the Rocks. Hopefully we'll get a few trophies tomorrow and another Wahoo or two. We'll call in tomorrow and let you know how we did, wish us luck."

Report from Alijos Rocks by the Excel, October 22, 2011
Mike Ramirez called in with an update from the Excel, "We fished Alijos Rocks today and it seemed that nothing changed. There was a little sign of tuna but the sharks were there. We were overrun by the sharks. We weren't able to get any tuna by them. We did manage to land a few nice Wahoo and a handful of better grade Yellowtail.
"That's it from the Excel, we are going to begin working our way back up tonight. We'll let you know how we did."
Hello Anglers, Here are a few pictures from our last couple days of fishing. Fishing has been good with a little bit of everything mixed in. The weather has also been very kind to us the last half of the trip. Mike

Excel's John Kashiki Memorial Trip Returns With Nice Wahoo
Mike Ramirez tied the Excel to the dock at Fisherman's Landing October 25 after an eight-day trip with 30 anglers. "We fished on The Ridge about halfway down," he said, "for some good yellowtail. We tried Alijos Rocks, where we saw good sign of tuna and wahoo. We got no big tuna on the boat, but we did manage some yellows and wahoo. One of the wahoo came on the dropper loop!"
Tom Wright of Bishop was the fortunate angler who caught that wahoo. "He bit about 30 or 40 feet down on the drop," he told Roecker, "and we thought at first it was a shark, the way it was pulling off line. I got it to the boat in about ten minutes, and the crew was real helpful in getting it around the anchor line." Wright's wahoo weighed 67 pounds, and it won him first place in the jackpot. He said he baited a sardine on a 6/0 Mustad hook tied to 125-pound Big Game fluorocarbon and 80-pound Line One spectra. He used a Penn 15 KG reel and a Daiwa five and a half-foot rod.
Randy Isogawa of Fresno won second place for a 60-pound wahoo and Chris Natividad of San Jose won third place for his 58.8-pound skinny. Bill Sandborn of Carson City, NV had the trip’s best yellowtail, a 38.2-pounder, and he stood in the lineup with the wahoo catchers. His fish also came on the dropper loop.
