Picture of a Giant Freshwater Ray

This ray was caught on a rod and reel in the Maeklong River in Thailand by Ian Welch on a National Geographic expedition (objective is to protect the large fish species in rivers and lakes).

That is a huge ray. I wonder how big the barb in the tail is.

I saw this on another site somewhere and they were toting it to be the "largest freshwater fish" ever caught on rod and reel. I think the article said it was in the upper 700 or low 800's. If that was the case, I guess the 1,000 pound Sturgeon that are caught don't qualify as freswater fish.

Wow, that is pretty impressive. I wonder why the Sturgeon fish don't count.

I've read about 349kg in that article, but it wasn't clear if the ray in the pic had that weight or if that specie could reach 349kg.

I'm going to do a little searching today to see if I can find that article I saw. I'll post it if I do and you can decide the "what's up with that?" about it.

    Also....

Check out this link and the post from this very site.

    Big Sturgeon
Now you tell me which is more,772 or 1,000?

That's why fisheries management is so screwed up. Nobody knows how to do math!
