    Good catfish setup?

I'm looking for some advice as to what I should purchase to have a good catfish setup. I'm going to be going after as big of cats as possible. I'm talkin' 50 pounds or more hopefully!

    Thanks

I will be fishing from the shore. I'm not sure on what kind of reel I'll be using, I'm open to suggestions.

    my 2 cents

I joined this forum to get some saltwater tackle advice, but I can certainly share with you what I know about freshwater cats. I have been fishing for them for 30 years, and I have found that a Shimano Baitrunner 4500, coupled with a plain ole downrigger rod about 7' long does me just fine. I have caught blue's up to 66 lbs on it. I spool it with as much 50lb power pro as it will hold, and then put a sinker (weight depends on if I am fishing current or in a lake) then a heavy barrel swivel. I tie on a leader of about 4' on the business end of the swivel and use 20-25lb big game, or heavier depending on if I am fishing for Channel Cats or Faltheads and Blues. I use a Daichii blood red circle hook, put my bait on, click the reel into baitrunner mode and sit down and open the cooler. The downrigger rod has enough flex to let me play a big one, but enough backbone to get him coming my way when it's time.
I hope this helps in some way.

trot line, some circle or kahle hooks, and a 12 pack of beer. put the stinkiest baits possible on it, throw it out, and wait.
