Jake.....I'm not much of a freshwater bass guy, but when I used to ride my bike over to the local lake, a wooly bugger was always in my fly box.
Colors....black,olive,rootbeer.
There are little poppers that are popular with panfish....I think the Sneaky Pete is one.
Bass....mice, clousers, frogs, crayfish. Heck...they eat anything in my experience.
Carp....there are a number of guys making mulberry flies for the carp along the C&O canal near and in DC. When the trees drop the fruit the carp go nuts after them.
"corn" flies, "bread" flies.
Do you tie?
Write down your questions for tie fest. It's 5 weeks away and I can't explain how much insane stuff you can learn there.
Tying is an important part of the show, but the experienced fishermen behind the vises are the true showcase of the place.
You can but it isn't easy..
Simply put, we look down on carp but it is a big mistake. They have the most highly developed sense of smell, sight, and taste of any freshwater fish. Much like a permit... slam dunk on bait and mind bending impossible on a fly. I love fishing for them.
You have to find out what they are feeding on. Have you observed them feeding? Are they in a pond? River? The mulberry hatch is easy pickins. Catching them under other conditions isn't easy. Each body of water is different. Sometimes they eat crayfish...actually pushing rocks over with their heads. Other times the go nuts for dragon fly larva... stoneflies too. Let me know a little more about the conditions and I can help out.
Google "bream killer" for any easy to tie and fun fly for big bluegill.
Bass.... I dunno... bass you say. Easy fish on the fly... I sight cast to them and hang the fly in their faces until they can't take it anymore. That's my nephew in the photo.. he reeled that one in.. backwards at first..
