Costa Rica Surf Fishing?

FNG here.

I'm looking at a January or March CR vacation. Is there surf fishing for rooster fish in CR at either of those times of year? I will be staying at either Hilton Papagayo or Doubletree Puntarenas...hotel points bum. Is one location better than the other for surf fishing (or nearer to good surf fishing).

Any recommended charters near either location?

Hey...You can fish from the beach about everywhere. Roosters are not all that common off the beach. More likely to catch a Snook or Snapper. But Roosters are cruising the outside sometimes. Make sure you do your homework. That Double Tree in Puntarenas is a JOKE and is about an hour from anything.There is a river right out front. Jan-Mar is PRIME time for Offshore. Now is really the time for the Roosters. Let me know if I can help or you'd like to go out after the Roosters or Sails.

Thanks for the heads up on the Double Tree. I did read a few bad reviews about it on Tripadvisor.com. If I put a trip together, I will contact you.

I also could stay at the Marriott Guanacaste (Tamarindo) or Marriott Los Suenos (Playa Herradura). Info on any of these locations would be appreciated.

To anyone in the know...Take my 12' surf rod to CR or leave it at home?

from what i've read take a plugging rod good for at least 3-4 oz
they throw a lot of surface plugs and rogers rangers(?) I would say braid is a must

Hello there. You touch a subject that Im very familiar with, being from Costa Rica. I would recommend that you head of to the Guanacaste zone for a better chance at catching roosters from the surf or from a boat. Papagayo or Tamarindo are good choices. If you are flexible on the destination i would also recommend you look into Carrilo, near the town of Samara or head of north to Junquillal Bay, Quajiniquil, near La Cruz. This two spots are in Guanacaste too.

The weather is sunny but windy. I would recommend you bring down 6'6'' to 8' rods on the medium-heavy or heavy range so you can throw the big ones. 10 to 15 lbs line with 40 to 60 lbs leadears are what we commonly use, altough when not in tournament I like using braid to fish for roosters, they like it where there are rocks and stuff that can snap your line.

Bring Rangers in 1 and 2 oz and a lot of silver spoons which we retrieve really, REALLY fast. Roosters, jacks and mackerels go boinkers for this kinds of lures, and if you are lucky there could be a small 4 to 10 pound mahi mahi in the mix.

Big poppers and cigar shaped surface walkers are also effective but at this time of the year with all the wind they are pretty much rendered useless for the most part, unless you are trolling them on a boat. Bring some jigs and swimbaits if the actions is not happening on top, you can always fish lower in the water column.
