There are a few others that will hook up to a gps with a wire and save the last knwon location, but that isn't good enough when your life is at stake. Especially if you do not carry an epirb, this is moreso a MUST item for safety. I recommend an epirb also but if that does not fit your budget atleast have this item or a seperate hand held gps and vhf with you in the ditch bag, without it your as good as lost out there. Put protein bars or candy bars in the bag, and a good amount of water along with basic first aid stuff. A whistle and a strobe light for a life jacket attached to it is always a good idea as well. Hopefully you never need the stuff but incase you do you will be glad you had it all.
The standard horizon hx850s is a great radio it only has a 6 hr life. Some icom models will go for 20 hrs. Carry extra bateries for your electronics. If you can get the alkaline batery tray for your radio get it and carry extra batteries I seal my batteries in a vacume seal bag that I use for freezing my fish, & any thing else i want to keep dry. You can keep extra water in the food saver bags also.
this is copy of my post in another thread. I figured the info could be help full.
Just to add on to MarlinMagic's post about the HX850...its one of very few handhelds that float, and even fewer that transmit at 6 watts. 99% of handhelds put out 5 watts. Makes a lot of sense to have the most powerful floating radio in your ditchbag you can get!!!!
capt tred i hope you read my response!! you are one of my heroes in the sportfishing world for all you do!!! I own a 23ft mako that i fish mostly out of oregon and hatteras inlets.. we are very blessed to have the gulf stream as close as we do here on the obx of north carolina. A few things that are in my ditch bag is a 8 ft 1/4 nylon line with stainless snaps tied 2ft apart. i never had to use this but if we ever needed to ditch we would be connected together.i also keep a spare strobe to run up the outriggers if needed. one other note i always run with another boat, but a life raft is in the near future..
