Captain Tred Barta - FISHING: Calcutta Kill Tournaments

Tred should be commended for his accomplishments in his charity work and contributions to the fishing industry. Which are well documented in other parts of this forum.

BUT this Calcutta Kill Tounament thread should never have been posted. He tells us we are the cancer of sportfishing, we are all hypocrites, even calls himself a hypocrite. He kills animals for money but if we do it we are NFG. This double moral standard just doesn't cut it.
If he never makes another post in this thread, it will be fine by me.

How in the hell can you justify saying "i don't make money off killing, becasue in my show 70% of the time we don't kill we teach the right way (or the barta way) or the hard work blah, blah, blah etc.....

Thats the biggest BS I've ever heard, you make money off killing, plain and simple.

Most tourny crews release 98-99%, so they kill 1-2% of the fish they catch, yet you kill in 30% of the shows you film. Alot of crews never see a dime, yet you ALWAYS get paid for KILLING.

I'm sorry to say this because it does go to a good cause, but the fact that your Barta boys and girls tourny in NC is a Governers Cup event is a absolute joke.

Coming in I consider myself unbiased on this topic not knowing anything about the Calcutta tournament and being only a freshwater fisherman w/2 saltwater experiences under my belt. I lived in upstate NY for 26 years and seven months ago moved to Lakewood, CO. After watching Treds video and reading through a couple responses, my view from 30,000ft is one of morals, values, and teaching kids the real reasons it is important to fish, hunt, and conserve. I have seen some disgusting things on the water, most recently while fishing the salmon run in Pulaski, NY. “Anglers” fighting fish to exhaustion and certain death, snagging fish w/lead and treble hooks, and most disturbing, tossing a fish on shore and giving it repeated blows to the head with whatever it is they choose to wear on their feet that day. What does this have anything to do with this tournament? Kids looking on and missing out on what fishing is really supposed to be about. Respect for the fish, doing the right thing, and teaching others to enjoy what the sport is supposed to be. So you bring your young boy or girl to this tournament and they see fish laying dead on the docks, and the one with the biggest gets a bag full of prize money. What does your kid think fishing is all about? Sure the tournament is legal, but does that make it right in respect to what Treds video is about? Money is fine, but have respect for the animals you harvest. I hang a deer by its hind legs..why? Because I believe it is disrespectful to tie a rope around its neck and let it hang by the head. This is the kind of respect I want to see others have. Why can’t they incorporate catch and release into this tournament???? Beats me, but I would be more apt to accept it as another great fishing tourney. Why are the fish being killed? Coming from somebody who knows nothing about the tournament, plain and simple…money. That’s not why I hunt and fish, or why I volunteer for the Colorado Division of Wildlife. So money is made on a TV show, but its for the right reasons-the values are good hearted with the youth of America in its best interest-I don’t see this as hypocritical, I see this as a channel to teach people the real reasons to fish, hunt, and what it means to be an outdoorsman. Think about it..would you have your young kid watch this tournament from the dock, or take in the messages conveyed from any one of Tred’s shows or articles? Bottom line is this tournament sends the wrong message to kids...and that for me is what the argument is all about.

Rather than use your time in the spotlight to promote conservation, responsibility, and stewardship, YOU KILL MAJESTIC CREATURES FOR NO REASON! In my home state, we have the most heinous of "Sportsmen Tournaments", the Monster Shark Tournament. I submit to you that no sportsman has ever competed in that tournament or any slaughter billfish tournament. If you chose to be an environmental whore, do us all a favor and take your money and shut up. Don't try to convince us you're doing it to save the children.

You know what I think..I think your put out by the "Monster Shark Tournament" because it disrupts your daily little tranquil life on the Vineyard for a couple days..not that I really care..but if you don't practice what you preach..or remember what you say or stand for.. perhaps you ought to sit in the peanut gallery and eat popcorn. An armchair warrior with political drival doesn't do anyone anygood, we got plenty of those..it just creates more negativity..and I highly doubt I would ever want to fish with you be it tournament or otherwise..you seem to me to be like the same people running our government..alot to say..and do nothing or do what suits you the best.

Id rather spend time on Block or Nantucket anyday because of people like you. Your left wing gaffaw is just that so keep it honest or keep it real, the vineyard was a bad choice for the Monster Shark Tournament, take it up with the Boston Big Game Fishing Club.

If you dont' live on the Vineyard well thats fine too..but the attitude needs adjusting wherever you live.

Hey tred - Just watched your show fishing in guatemala. Whats up with the j hooks? I guess its not OK to kill a few fish to win a tournament but you have no problem cut hooking a few so you can capture it on film just you can say you caught a trashbag on 8 lb test.
