WA 2007 Year in Review: Kings, Halibut, Lings, and TUNA
Here is a look back at 2007 fishing in WA state. All of the king salmon, halibut, and lingcod were caught out of Neah Bay which is the most northwest point of WA (and the US). The tuna were caught out of Westport, WA. Lingcod season starts in April on the coast and goes to October. Halibut ramps up in May and we are lucky if we can get a week long season out of that. Luckily, this last summer, they opened it back up a couple times, because fishermen hadn't met the quoata the first week. Salmon opens up the first week of July and goes through August and September (depending on marine area and the weather). We hit up the tuna when the warm water is close enough. This year guy were nailing them in June, but the middle/end of July is more like it.
Enjoy.... King Salmon... Here is a typical group of kings from Blue Dot (about 35 miles from cape flattery). These are Colombia river kings that follow a ridge from canada back to their home river in WA. It is nothing to limit in 2 hours when you find a school. Most of the fish are between 25 and 35 lbs all the way up to 60lbs. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Here is the biggest king of the summer. My buddy caught this one. it weighed in at 57 lbs. This is a once in a lifetime fish. The state record is 68 lbs. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The halibut were plentiful this last summer. Most of these fish came from Swiftsure Bank (on the Canadian side). The biggest we got (70 lbs.) came off of a local spot called the Garbage Dump, no more than 5 miles from port. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The lings were thick too. The biggest one topped 28 lbs. Biggest I have caught to date was 36 lbs. They can swallow a volleyball so live bait is the way to go... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Mixin it up.... ![]() And of course a few shot of our ridiculous albacore season... ![]() ONe football Bluefin in the mix ![]() The captain with a two rods going off on a live bait stop. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The freezers are full...and I am going nuts lookin at all the giant BFT reports and LR YFT reports out of SD. Back to work.... -CORNFED |

FASTWATER - I need to join PSA...haven't yet. I was going to go visit Ron at his SnoKing Chapter meeting this last thursday, but had to work. I live in the Seatac area though so I will probably be going to Des Moines or Renton meetings most of the time. Which chapter are you part of? OP for nates? What you talkin' bout? |
