Ucluelet, Vancouver Island: More than enough Salmon and Halibut!
This summer, we've been bringing in the fish by the cooler-full! While 2008 was slower along the coast, 2009 has certainly rebounded. The whole summer we saw large amounts of good sized fish! Ucluelet fishing keeps our rods busy!
Chinook salmon (Kings), Coho salmon (Silvers), and Halibut have been biting in the Ucluelet, Barkley Sound area. We mainly trolled using hutchies, spoons, anchovies, and tomic plugs.
We brought in Chinook in May and June between 10-30 pounds, and by July and August we were reeling in the big boys, even up to 45 pounds!
Cohos were all over the place, biting anything we put down. Sometimes, while trolling, we couldn't go more than a minute without bites!
The weather this summer was great. The west coast of Vancouver Island is subject to the wind and the waves, but this summer we got out to the best banks almost every day throughout June, July, and August. The areas north and south of Ucluelet regularly had higher winds, but our area stayed relatively calm in comparison.
Awesome.......I was in Tofino in July and we put the wood the Salmon and Lingcod.........3 of us caught over 60 Springs to 30lbs in just 2.5 days........doubles all day long, it was awesome. Then, when we switched to Lings, I seriously didn't go a single drop without a Ling or huge Vermillion on like 25 consequtive drops.......crazy fishing on the backside of V.I. this year.
