Pending Junior World Record Halibut 10/3
Fall is in the air here in Southern California and the big halibut have started to chew, like they most always do this time of year.
The past few weeks down this way have not produced great numbers, but quality 20-30lb fish. Mark Cernish, his wife Joy, and their 10 year old grandson Cristian enjoyed one of those days that few ever will in their lifetime on their boat “Flyer”. We met at the Custom Rod Show and traded thoughts on Bounceballing. He emailed me photos of Cristian’s huge flattie they got Bounceballing using Mark’s homemade rigs with 20lb test. I asked Mark what it felt like when he saw deep color (I get the flattie shakes just thinking about it!) and he said “when it came up I was totally shocked, I thought it was a small fish in kelp and then the fish rolled over belly up. I could see how large the fish was. I yelled at my wife for a larger gaff. It was so large my wife and I both pulled it over the side. I told my Grandson and wife to move away from it. I put a rope through the gills and tied it to the side of the boat. All of us could not believe our eyes”. They ran back to the Balboa Angling Club and weighed her in going 52lbs. It’s a pending 20lb class Junior World Record. How sweet is that? Tight Lines, Rick
