Morning Star fishin g report , San Rafael 8-28
First stop yesterday (Thursday August 24) was right in front of the harbor. Two passes later – one legal halibut and a couple shakers. A hot tip from a reliable source (Huck Finn) reported 4 commercial boats fishing the north bar with live bait the day before caught 81 halibut at the top of the incoming and first of the outgoing tide.
“We can just make it!”
The ocean was flat with a lazy swell on top of the bar. Four commercial boats and two charter boats were poised and ready for the big kill. Two hours – and two halibut later – it was time to try something else.
We rock cod fished our way back to the bay starting at Pt. Bonita and all parts east.
Next stop was Raccoon Straits to see if the bait stealing harbor seal would permit us a drift or two. He wouldn’t.
By now it’s getting late in the day, so we headed south of Red Rock where there were a few halibut the previous day. Two drifts; Four halibut caught and three escapees.
Which begs the question; “Why would you go halfway to Maui to catch two halibut in two hours when you can catch four in twenty minutes right in front of the harbor?”
After exhaustive research and soul searching the answer was obvious. It’s the Deckhand’s fault.
Bottom line; 7 halibut to fifteen pounds, 3 ling cod, 1 kelp greenling and 26 rock cod for 8 anglers.
Good fishing, Gordon Hough
