Lake Chelan Area Fishing Report for 4/30/12

What’s hot is trolling the deep water above the Narrows on Lake Chelan for big Mackinaw early in the morning. Heating up is the kokanee fishing on Lake Chelan. Also hot, is Roses Lake for a potpourri of species.



On Chelan, fish the deep water above the Narrows. Worden Lures T4 Flatfish in Luminous Chartreuse, Mack’s Lures Cha Cha Squidders and Rushin’ Salmon Wobblers were the most productive Lures up there during the reporting period. Speed your presentation up to around 1.6 mph for best effect. This continues to be an early morning gig. Kokanee are showing up all the way from the Narrows to Lakeside. Try trolling a Mack’s Lures Flash Lite in front of a Mack’s mini cha cha squidder baited with Pautzke’s Fire Corn. We got a nice 14 inch chromer to start our season.



Roses Lake continues to amaze. In addition to the standard catch of overwintering 9 to 12 inch rainbow trout, anglers have been catching nice jumbo rainbows, triploid rainbows, Largemouth Bass and some huge Tiger Trout. Also, Bluegill, sunfish and perch are beginning to show up. The pending state record Tiger Trout came out of Roses during the reporting period. It reportedly weighed a whopping 15.04 pounds. Casting lures and baitfishing have all been productive there.



Wapato Lake has opened up to mixed reviews. You’ll have to hunt for your fish there.



Your fishing tip of the week is to check those leaders for nicks. It can cost you a big fish. Always run your leaders through your fingers before putting them in the water. While you’re at it, test those knots before getting them wet.



The kid’s tip of the week is to let those young teen boys struggle some. I had a boy that was out for his 13th birthday get the big fish this week. A truly big fish. Look at the picture! If his dad had given him an out he might have handed the rod off. We encouraged him and he grew a bit when he realized he had handled it by himself. I had a back-up plan to buffer the disappointment if he had lost it. Something like, losing them is part of the game too; I’ve lost loads of them myself. Good try. Get the idea?



Your safety tip of the week is to watch out for that rock island just off the Mill Bay boat launch now that it is barely submerged. It’s a prop eater…
