We have two definites and two possibles for the Charleston, SC trip on the new Billfisher on June 19 and 20. Sounds like we should be sold out pretty quick on this leg. If anyone has interest in the stop please shoot me a PM for the details. Jon has posted a little information about fishing in Charleston as well as the brand new spence that we will be fishing on. I am really looking forward to this trip.
The BILLFISHER was built by Spencer Yachts in Wanchese North Carolina. She will be launched in June of 2008. The BILLFISHER is powered by a pair of C-32 Acert Caterpillars which produce 1800 horsepower a piece allowing the BILLFISHER to have a cruising speed of 35 knots. Her hull is constructed out of triple planked Joubert plywood which is encapsulated in fiberglass. Spencer Yachts modern construction methods create a hull which is not only extremely strong, but also lightweight. This is what allows the BILLFISHER to have the high cruising speed, without sacrificing efficiency. We have outfitted the BILLFISHER with the latest in today's marine electronics including a Northstar 6100i with Sirius Satellite WX and SST capabilities, a Furuno Navnet3, FCV1200 fishfinder, Furuno RD30, ICOM 804 SSB, 2 ICOM 604 VHFs, and a FLIR night vision camera. The interior of the BILLFISHER is a comfortable setting with cozy leather couches, a 42" LCD television with DIRECTV service, and a full galley with convection microwave and sub-zero refrigeration. The cockpit of the BILLFISHER has a mezzanine couch, refrigerated drink boxes, a Gagganau BBQ grill, and an Eskimo icemaker. A Release Marine fighting chair, 4 live well pumps, and an oversized fishbox ensure that the BILLFISHER is equipped for any type fishing.
Fishing in Charleston, SC
Charleston has been flying under the radar for a few years now as far as billfishing is concerned, but I never go past it on my trip North or South. A few years ago my friends the Hanckels called and said we had better stop and fish on our way to Florida so we did. We were not let down. We fished the next three days and caught 27 out of about 40 bites on the sails. And we pulled off a blue one. On the way North the following May we stopped in to fish for a week and ended up staying a month. The meatfishing was awesome and we did see a billfish almost every day. I think we ended up catching a couple blues and 3 whites and about 2 dozen sails in May. We did have a shot at a grand slam one day but we jumped off the white. After a busy winter we returned to Charleston for the month of June and had great fishing. We fished 14 days that month and caught 40 sails and a couple of Blue marlin. On more than a few days we had double digit bites. The gaffer fishing can good and sometimes the wahoo are ravenous in on the ledge. They did have a decent tuna bite, but we spent the majority of our time to the south of Georgetown Hole. The run isnt bad here either, we fished the majority of our days about 50 miles from the jetty. Last fall the boat was in the yard, but the sail bite was excellent again from all the accounts I got. Hell, their bite lasted until almost christmas, the Summer Girl caught a super slam in december! We should be there on the new boat around the beginning of june and staying until the 2nd of July.
