Man this one has been argued over many beers by many people on many bar stools and once again the question arose last week while having dinner with the next charter to fish with my buddy capt. bradon. So whats constitutes a miss or just a raise or just saw a fish. let me give you some thoughts that i heard passed around the table during this conversations.
1. a fish in the spread that doesn't eat is not a miss.
2. a fish that attacks that a teaser but doesn't bite is not a miss
3. a fish that eats a bait and misses then eats another bait and is missed is on considered one miss.
4. on the contrary someone else said the above is two misses.
5. and that fish is caught in scenario 3 is it 1 caught or is it 2 misses and one caught.
6. i fished with a couple sf.comers a couple years ago in another spot and we missed the same blue marlin 7 times before it finally swam away. two minutes later i heard the captain say we were 0 for 7. Were we?
to some this is just a plane stupid conversation but to others it is on par with latin soccer players argueing over yellow cards.
Hell in one country i fish in some captains put more stock in raises and don't give a shit about misses or released fish. thought being that raised fish are the work of the crew - everything else is just whatever happens next.
In the long run it really doesn't matter but it does make for some fun bar room banter
So lets hear it what a raise, a miss etc?

It could be an inch or a mile, as long as it does not hit the target...
Ok, on the other hand Bill, this is another Penn- Shimano debate.
For me, a fish enters the spread and down not get hooked, is 1 missed fish. If the same fish hits 6 diffrent lines and does not get hooked, we were 0 for 6 on that fish bite wise, but only 1 missed fish...
When I say we were 2 for 5 for the day, it means 5 fish were in the spread and 2 were released.
When I count at the end of the day its the number of fish that gave us clean shots... During the day I count the clean shots... But I make it clear when I'm talking to the crew thats 0 for however many "shots"...
I don't count mystery fish that do a drive by tap even if it has a bill. For me a raise is a clearly visible fish that doesn't eat.
Where it can be a question mark is when we have a big swam come up and blow up the spread without bowing up. That is a train wreck.
Leader at tip or touched is the release. Billing em and getting the hook back is a catch...
in other news, I recall the debate that came up with everyone at the table that night. Whatever you do, dont mention that lodge or peoples feelings might get hurt.
Day 4, 3 releases/5 bites (as in, pulled the bait off the hook or commit suicide and pulled the hook)/14 fish visited the spread

I like to count how many fish we raise, how many bit (no matter how many baits a fish goes after it is one bite), and how many were caught. raised 10, 8 shots, caught 6- that sort of thing. it is fine to say something like the second fish took 10 tries to get or something like that. If I miss the same fish 3 times on the same bait, and catch him on the 4th try on that same bait.... Did i miss him, or did he, that long nosed eyes on the side of his head dumb ass, miss me those first 3 times? I mean afterall, i must have still had a bait for him to keep coming back to- how is that more than 1 shot? I say it isn't. Actually, I don't careif it takes multiple baits on the same fish, 1 fish can never equal more than 1 shot. Unless you are some sort of ass clown that needs to pad your stats to sound like you see a whole bunch of fish.
That being said, i take full credit and say that whitey burned me on 5 baits before i got him, when that scenario happens. Still 1 for 1, just took 5 tries to get that one.
how bout if I miss him twice but nicos gets him on the right long. did I miss one and nico go 1 for 1.
I have heard some great excuses as to why people miss. quite frankly I have made up a few myself.
Franky reminded of this on his post. One claims that he doesnt miss fish. The fish miss him.
I have been known to call out "bonita bite" when I missed one without anyone knowing I got bit
One guy swears the fish never took the bait - never mind that the line decided to bust a 90 and take out half a spool.
We asked one captain who decided to tell us that we have missed 15 and really need to do better, to hook the next one for us and show us how its done. He kept walking up the latter to the bridge. He looked down and said if I hooked it I would just be doing my job, If I missed it then you guys wouldn't listen to me anymore
Probably the best one I heard was of a captain that I love to fish with in OC. He relayed a story about his first job as a mate. The captain was an ass. On this particular day the mate was 0 for 12. The captain called him to the bridge and said if you miss the next fish you are fired. Dejected the mate down stairs almost afraid to pick up the rod on the next fish. Well within 10 minutes the fish comes up on the teaser. This time the mate was ready. He reached behind the seat and pulled out a 410 and shot the fish dead. He looked up to the captain and calmly asked the captain if he missed that one This was many years ago when conservation wasn't so prevelent.

If one fish eats all 5 baits out and then all 6 pitch baits before getting away or getting caught, its still one fish. I dont understand padding your numbers, or counting every bite from one fish as more shots just to tell everyone how many bites you have had. A fish that piles on a teaser and goes away is not a shot or bite. A fish that comes in the spread and goes bait to bait and dredge to teaser to the other dredge and then fades back and surfs around behind you for 5 minutes is just an a-hole.
