Bogart, I think you're missing a trick. I'm pretty sure you can fit a bunch of vertical rodholders to the sides of that ice-box in the bow. Must be room for another 20 rods or so there, surely ?
Bill, agree with you 100%. White marlin are great to eat, as are spearfish, and even small blues. Every pelagic fish is fit to eat in some way or another, and if there are lots around of something, I see no wrong in taking a fish for food. Structurally, I much prefer to eat stuff from the bottom of the pyramid food-chain, not the top, but even that is inevitable sometimes.
For example, during the first few years of the 1990's we did inadvertently kill a few big blue marlin in Madeira through lack of knowledge about boat handling. But none of those fish went to waste. Most were given away to the orphanages there, but when they didn't want any fish and we had nowhere else to take them, we smoked them. There was a hotel up the road with a huge smokehouse and we got 50% of the fish and they got the other. Even a 1000lb fish smokes "okay". Depending on fat content, some of them smoked better then others, and were exceptionally nice ! The clients, even the most ardent conservationists, approved of both the taste and the lack of waste.
So, having said that, here's an idea. Build a trailerable smokehouse. Do the big tournaments, smoking all the weighed fish on the spot. No waste, no shrieks from Peta, plenty good food for everyone. Hmmm, what an opportunity for a sponsor.....
