No offense mentioned by this comment, but is that fish dead? It gets released and promptly sinks down head first without any tail kicking at all and looks to sink striaght down to the bottom.

When we have release marlin, typically they are kicking pretty hard when we let them go and then they slowly swim off.

In my opinion that is just an extremely exhausted fish, not a dead one. Obviously I am not 100 percent sure but it looks like it has a very slow tail beat. Also, as long as the fish has some life in it when it gets below the thermocline I would expect it to survive.

Good to know. I haven't caught enough of them to confidently say how they should look before you let them go! The appearance of that fish sinking was just a bit concerning. We revived one big blue for a hour last year before we sent her though. It took a really long time for her to start kicking hard.

A wise man once told me you can "wake up" a marlin during the revival by smacking it in front of the dorsal to help get it going. Is there any truth to that?
