Tuna Bite - Los Suenos Pict report

OC Captain Al, Mover II (bill), Nick and I had had decided to go back to Costa Rica instead of trying somewhere new like Panama or going back to Guatemala. While botht the other places were tempting Al, Nick and Bill had not been to CR and we all enjoying fishing with our buddy Howard in OC. So we booked the flight and called howard and off to Jaco we went. We booked our room and land transfers through http://hookedoncostarica.com Josh. Just set us up in a beautiful 3 bedroom condo smack in the middle of Jaco. grocery store, pharmacy and shopping center across the street, resturants right across the street, monkey and beetle less then a 3 minute walk. It was a perfect location.

I booked a ride to the airport from salisbury and all was ok until we got to the airport and the drivers trunk wouldn't open. My damn passport and luggage was in the trunk. So after some pounding, cursing, screaming and yelling I told the guys to go on without me and I would catch up later. We drove all over md. to get the trunk open and I finally got to Jaco at around 12:30am. So it was 12 hours late but I felt like I missed two days of fun.

We met up with Howard and Alacran for the first day of fishing and it was a short ride to the grounds. Within a few minutes we had our first sailfish in the baits and it turned out to be a double out of a triple.

this kept up most of the day but our % 's were suffering as most of our triples ended up being singles. Not sure what the issue was. Maybe someone can help me out and let me know what was wrong.

After about 5 sails nick finally put the circle hook in the corner of our first marlin's mouth. It was beautiful stripey that kicked nicks butt.

Nick finally tapped out and handed the rod of to bill. The fish dug deep and It was probably for the better that nicked handed it off. He kinda lost color in his face rather quickly

Bill got the fish to the boat but not until he had another 10 minutes of stubborn stripey ass kickin.

Nick had to regain some strength for the next stripey

Bill on the other hand did what he does best. THIS ONE IS FOR YOU KARL!

Al then connected with a striped marlin

We finished the day 9 for 18 on sails and 2 for 2 on striped marlin

Sunday was a relax day as we spent the day watching playoff football at the Hook up in Los Suenos. Stay tuned for Day 2 of fishing

Oh yeah baby, nothing like Jaco and the offshore and onshore action in CR!!! Hope you guys continue to have a great trip Bill. Don't be afraid to throw some monster lures out there if those blues are around, last time we did that we scored with a 700#er within sight of the Suenos jetties.

I would have torn that trunk open with my bare hands if it meant another 12 hours of playtime at the Beetle bar.

After a long day of football I was ready to get back on the boat for day 2. It didn't take long to get the fist sail bite and it was a steady pick all day.

we picked the first one off the left teaser of 9 inch black squidnation squids and a black and red ilander jet.

We tried to work the spinners for a tuna bite but only raised a sail

Caught a stripey with a short bill

Ended the day with an impressive % of 6 for 6 on sails and 3 for 4 on stripeys.

Tuesday went back to the long line that produced for us the prvious day and imdeidatly scored on a double sail.

Al scored with a stripey to keep the marlin a day thing going.

Bill had the most impressive stripey fight of the week. When this one decided we wanted to come in the cockpit. Thank God Howard was on his game and bumped it forward so the fish could just keep jumping on by.

Heres a little video of Bill's fish

finished the day with 5 sails and a 2 stripeys.

Wednesday we took the day off and went ATV'ing. Al found a friend. I know you area suppose to be careful of "friends" in Costa Rica but this one was short, cute, cuddly - hey whats not to like.

Last day of fishing was Thursday. We decided to try and head to the seamount about 50 miles offshore to see if the great conditions would bring us lots of billfish. A couple miles short we saw the spinners and caught a small yellowfin for lunch and then kept heading off to the mount. W got a sail and then I finally caught my stripey for the week.

and caught a few sails to round out a great week of fishing

Finally saw our blue marlin although its not exactly where we wanted to see it.

All in All a great week and thanks to Howard and Alacran of the Tuna Bite and To Josh of http://hookedoncostarica.com

Nice report and Pictures Bill. I hope we can catch a few Marlin on our trip. I can't wait to get down there on Friday. Our first fish day is Sunday so I will let you know how the fishing was with Bobby McGuinness. When I get up to Jaco next Thursday would I get preferential treatment and the Pino discount if I drop your name around?
