    take marlin off the menu

The Take Marlin off the Menu campaign is designed to educate people about what billfish are, their role in the ecosystem and their imperiled state from commercial overfishing. The ultimate goal is, through education and political advocacy, to end the commercial harvest, sale and importation of marlin, sailfish and spearfish in the United States.

After all, if you saw lion or tiger for sale in a restaurant or grocery store would you buy it?

    Of course not.

Well, it's time we began thinking of billfish the same way.

    Who We Are
Meet the International Game Fish Association,
National Coalition for Marine Conservation, and The Billfish Foundation,
the three U.S.-based groups working together in the campaign.

    Background on Billfish
Learn more about marlin, sailfish and spearfish, their role in the ocean and the status of their populations. Be sure to view our species fact sheets.

Why Take Marlin Off the Menu
Marlin and other billfish populations throughout the world are being wiped out by overharvesting. They may also contain harmful levels of mercury.

of getting billfish off menus and out of supermarkets.

I have seen it on the menu but I refuse to order it and I state my reasons to the resturant. I feel the same way about swords but about the only way to get them off the menu is when they are extinct.

they are on some high end menus.. you will normally see them as kajiki!!!

it is awesome and it tastes wonderful.. i dont order tons of it but i have eaten it before and i truly do enjoy it but would not make a habit out of it..

i truly feel that this is part of any ecosystem. like i always say.. imagine if the people on earth never became deceased!?

it would be kinda tough to fit all of these people on earth!!

Am I missing the link to the web site? I think this is a great; I really would like to check out the site! but correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t it illegal to catch and sell billfish in the US? The only way restaurants can sell it, is if it is imported?? so now your dealing with other countries...how do you deal with that?

this is a great cause although I have to plead guilty, I’ve had smoked marlin, raw marlin, and it cooked many ways, but it was usually when pop caught it, I’ve only ordered off the menu once....but damn is it good!

Pacific Billfish are legal to catch and sell by commercial fishermen.

Hubris- I have seen marlin on the menu as Pacific Blue Marlin at two resturants in Salisbury, md. I have also seen it in Las Vegas as Pacific Blue Marlin. A buddy of mine saw it on the menu in Annapolis, md From what I understand it is more popular in the Central united states not near any coastline. The resturants don't catch nearly the flack for serving it.

Krissi - here is the website - http://www.takemarlinoffthemenu.org/home

    MY COMMENT ON THIS QUESTION...

After all, if you saw lion or tiger for sale in a restaurant or grocery store would you buy it?

i def. would eat it.. i am the kind if person who will try anything once.. i love all sorts of crazy azz food.. i have eaten crocs, alligator, kangaroo and a bunch of other crazy azz crap.. i sure would eat sea lion and tiger if they were somewhat good and cooked to my liking..

but that is just me.. i know it is bad to serve these and people are going to get hot and heavy about the debates on that site you provided..

but can this site provide any specifics on the number of billfish killed for human consumption in the usa!?!?

    Vinnie,

Since you will eat almost anything why don't you do some frog legs next time you cook a pig and pass them off as BBQ buffalo wings(note be sure to cut the web foot off)
