So you just got Pulled overboard - Now What?

Was talking to a couple buddies about this the other day and it got me wondering. Lets say you are fighting a fish and you get pulled over. Have you ever thought about what you would do. Well as you are going ass over 50wide is not the time figure out your game plan. What would you do. Lets assume you are not wearing a mate saver. But you are strapped to the reel. Lets hear it!!!!!!! whats yours plan?

Remember by posting your ideas you may not only save your own life but you may also give folks an idea of what to do if it happens to them.

The first and foremost thing to do is back the drag off all the way, do not freespool. A freespool runs the risk of a serious snarl, rats nest or whatever you prefer to call it. When this happens it creates nothing but pure pressure on the rig and harness. By backing the drag off this will allow some of the pressure to be relieved.

Secondly is make the decision to dump the rig or hang on till crew turns around.

That's an abstract thought...some people probably have to ponder over a study card to come up with the right answer for that scenario.

I dunno??? Back the drag off and swim like Michael Phelps would if he were to see a packed binger at the end of his lane straight to the tuna door...get in the boat and crank like hell to get tight???

My buddy has done it... fell over midship belly flop style walking a tuna to the bow on the chunk in the middle of the night after getting tripped up on the toe rail cleat. He backed the drag off a little bit, enough to keep his head afloat, and doggy paddled to the kill door. Got to his feet and managed to dust the fish...

This is going to get good I have a feeling! Bill, I'll get that package shipped out to you in the next day or two. Finally got home to pick em up. Sunday-Monday overnighter...stoked for our first shot.

Hope all is well. Be in touch

I can't claim to be a memeber. But I am the chairman of the 30 knot club. that was not very fun. the name on the stern gets very small as the boat is moving away at 30 knots.

Funny stuff! I would back the drag off and NEVER let go of the rod in hopes of getting dragged back in the tuna door and getting the fish to the boat.

Stemming from my commercial days I always carry two knives on me, one on my shoulder strap and the other on my hip. Cut yourself free. There is not a fish swimming worth drowning for, or a rod and reel that can't be replaced.
