    Question Rigging/Spooling Question

I have 4 new Penn 16VSX reels that I want to spool with spectra, then add a mono top shot to. They are recommended for 450yds of 80# spectra with 50 yds of 60# mono top shot. That seems excessive for what I want to do.

I am thinking more along the lines of having them spooled up with maybe 500 yds of 50# spectra and 150 to 200 yds of 30# mono. Does this make sense, or am I missing the point here?

Would love the groups collective comment and help.

    Thanks,

The 16vsx is more of a compact tuna reel with a very steep drag curve and thats why that is the recommended line setup. If you are going to be using the reels primarily for whites you should think about the 16vs. this is the same reel with a much softer drag curve designed to fish mono.

I loaded mine up with 80 power pro for sharking and trolling held more then enough line.

    Question I hear you...

    Crab:

I actually have four of each. The thought was to have my flats and pitch baits be on the 16vs reels spooled with just mono and the longs would be on 16vsx reels with maybe a blue marlin pitch bait being a 16vsx too. That said, my thoughts were to spool the vsx reels with more string as oppossed to heavier string. Do you think that defeats the purpose??? That way if something big like a tuna or blue does pile on one, you'd at least have a chance of landing them.

i like your logic a lot. We have started replacing the 50's in our spread with 16vsx's. We are spooling ours with 80lb braid to 60lb mono top shot.
