A quick Swimming Rig-video
This video shows a great swimming rig using wire. We used this rig all week in Costa Rica with Dave Dobbins http://www.fishlamanta.com/linkpage.php
and it is nothing short of awesome. As you will see it is very similar to the Guac rig but is faster and easier to rig up. And to be honest, I think the baits actually swim better with this rig than a Guac (which uses a swivel). It is more forgiving than the Guac if you are not dead center and we were trolling a good 7.5 kts ( damn Marlin hunters ).The Mate is a good friend of Dave's and is one hell of a rigger. This is his day to day, go to rig. In the video, telephone wire is used (they get it for free and I didn't ask how). Monel will work fine, if not better, but is expensive in CR. We did run some on copper, but the copper will break at the hook connection if not careful inserting the hhook. No such worries with monel. The things to make sure of with this rig are to: keep all wire wraps tight; come up from the bottom and through the top of the beak BEHIND the wire tat lays over the forehead; make the little loop and come back down through the beak in front of the wire on the forehead. Don't leave your loop too big. Simply insert your hook, give the loop a half twist and you are good to go. It will not come off in the water, yet is easily removed when you want to change baits. Thanks moonbat
...i will give that a try in a few weeks. Looks quick and easy to rig and not the hassle of getting the hook and swivel size perfect for the guac rig. Does it still dig and swim like a guac?

No wonder it's so hard to make a phone call down there...all their telephone lines are offshore.
Man that looks good and easy, thanks for sharing. Do you have any video of it swimming by any chance? It looks like it would wiggle and squirm like it was alive and all cracked up ![]() |

Sorry, no video of the baits working, but they swam perfect. In 4 days of fishing, not a single one wanted to ride on it's side or come up out of the water. Do notice the larger weights that are needed for the faster than Atlantic trolling speeds (and rather large ballyoo).

BTW, you will never get the first poke through the bottom side without a needle if using monel. Also poke it through a good ways up the forehead so there is still pleanty of room left on the beak when you come back through with the loop. |

Great Video glenn - I am in the middle of uploading the guatemala rigging and never thought to do it in slow mo.
BTW - My wife came home from Micheals a couple of days ago and found this stuff in the $2.00 bin. 26 gage 1/4lb bright. Believe it or not she said I remember being on the boat and saw that you used something similar to this, so for $2.00 I thought you might be able to use it for your fishing stuff. It may not be free but if your driving by a craft shop you may wanna take a look.I think it is used for artistic flower and basket arrangements ![]() |
