    Pulling Stripteaser

I recently bought a stripteaser as my entry into the world of teasers and dredges and I was hoping for some advise on pulling it. I know I am too lazy to rig a natural mullet or ballyhoo dredge so I thought this was a good start. We fish out of a 29 regulator, and I was planning on pulling it from a bent butt on the on the short corner. I know you want to get it down a little, so do I need a weight in front of it? If so, what size and how would you rig it?
    Thanks a lot

Off that set up you would be better off using a downrigger instead of a bent butt rod. Rig it with 3-400lb mono and use 24-32 oz lead depending on your speed and you should be good

    dirtyj,
are you talking about running it off of the downrigger with that 24-32oz weight or were you talking about the bent butt? We don't have a downrigger so I probably can't do that.
    Thanks a lot

A bent butt will work fine. If you have one available, I would try to make it a stubbie bent butt rod if possible or a short stand up without a lot off flex. Just make sure you have enough reel to take the dredge away/pull in closer from a fish to switch him or her to a pitch bait if you need to.

With my 69 fish strip I have had great luck with a 48 oz both off a downrigger and a planer rod. But I do have an extra weight ready in case the dredge starts to rise and maybe come out of the water in a following sea with some swell. ( I keep a 32 oz ready for this to pull in tandem with my 48oz)

Also, I use braid on my dredge rod and downrigger. Less resistance than mono. I know a lot of people that use mono on electrics, 80s and 130s that have great success. Trial and error will determine what you like and what works best.

Another good idea is put some type of shell squid over the weight that matches the overall color of your dredge. This will aid in shedding grass tremendously.

Also, try to swing the bent butt rod out to the side and let the dredge ride in the clean water where you can keep an eye on it for fish and grass hanging up.

Strips are a great way to start off learning to dredge fish.

    BTH284,
Thank you that was a huge help. I've got 130lb braid on this reel and the rod is a tallus stump 80+, so I may just have to make that work for the time being. If they will just open some water in the gulf i can get that thing wet.
    Thanks again

I have 2 dredges - 1 stripteaser and 1 Blue Water Candy... I pull each the same way - 48oz trolling lead with a rubber squid over it in front of the dredge, and I pull the whole rig on a bent butt (short) planer rod. The reel is an Avet 50EXW spooled with 130 Braid. The reel can easily handle the dredge.

I have downriggers that I used to use, but it is so much easier to handle the planer rod - AND to get it out of the way, that I do not use the downriggers anymore.

    clt_capt,
thank you, that is good to hear, because my few experiences with downriggers were kind of a mess. I may buy a planer rod depending on how it works when I get to try it.
    Thank you

You can also look into a dredge rod that will mount/ thread into a #4 butt. I have seen one recently that looks similar to a downrigger boom but it may be a bit pricey for now.

Once you get the hang of fishing the stripteaser and where you like to and how to run it, start experimenting with the Bluewater candy style dredges with rubber fish. Then ultimately try using split tail mullet behind the flash skirts. I have been recently turned on to using these, the realism of this style of dredge is incredible.

Dredge rod example (planer rod works great too and gives you 2 rods in one)

You said you were too lazy to build an actual mullet dredge. I have a cheap artificial mullet dredge with a balleyhoo as a chaser and have had multiple fish on that thing.
