Pretty Interesting Spanish Rig

It swims nice but not so sure about the lack of free swinging hook. But yet another way to rig a spanish. Check it out

Thumbs up

I've not tried the one for spanish but the one for ballyhoo rigs quick with beautiful swimmers ! Better results than a chin weight wired between the gill plates and easier. It is a circle hook, tourny legal, and requires the same hookup techniques.

I know from personal experience that about anything Tim Barefoot puts out has gone thru an amazing amount of hands on testing in actual fishing.

On an aside - Grouper can't stand to have those crab jigs anywhere near! They gotta have em. Anyone who catches grouper in No Caralacka has seen those red crabs they imitate on the deck or at least what is left of them.

Spanish Chin Weight

I used the 18/0 Spanish Rig in the WMO in Ocean City in August. It pulls a spanish mackerel better than ANY rig I've ever used. The bait actually swims upright every time...doesn't skip.

Unfortunately, no blue marlin hook ups, but the bait didn't wash out. I could have pulled the same bait for a second day.

Rigging was too easy. I used my deboning tool to make take out a plug through his skull and out his jower jaw. This created a channel for the hook to go through. One stitch of floss to close the gills. Another stitch to close his mouth. That's it.

It does swim really prettily. If you wanted a free swinging hook maybe you could achieve a similar effect by rigging the mackerel with a chin weight to get it swimming upright then attach the hook to the bait similar to the ron hamlin guatemala rig.
