i like to have a pitch rod ready but it doesnt always get used. depends on what rod i am closer to at the time. I guess if i used the flatline rod to hook i could then use the pitch bait rod to replace it in the spread and cover all my bases if another fish comes up

Covering all the bases makes so much sense.

Back to the short rigger; positioning the bait right next to or just behind the teaser, (like many like to do anyway) as the teaser is pulled away, the angler cranks the bait behind the teaser(rod is still in the holder, line running through the pin) the rod is freespooled and picked up as the pin is popped.
In other words since it is already there it just follows the teaser up.

Simultaniously the pitchbait is deployed as either a prospect bait, or to put 2 baits next to the teaser. Or the flat is picked up and dumped?

Just thinking out loud.

Situations Like Rhodekill described are why I hate yelling. If the mate was not yelling at the angler to get the bait in and stop making a rookie mistake or whatever, Rhodekill could have explained that he was already feeding a fish and someone could have gotten a bait to the teaser fish as well. Had the identical situation with Dave on the Miss Behavin last week. When I told him I was already feeding a fish, somebody got the teaser fish, I believe we ended up getting the double.

Communication is key.

Really cool sequence Bill. It's amazing that people can remain composed in a situation like that. Awesome lesson, thanks.

My strategy would have been to hope like hell the fish bites that short bait, because I just froze and won't know to turn the boat and won't yell for the pitch bait to go in.

My thoughts on yours; once again just thoughts, if you are cranking up the short rigger and the fish switches off sooner then expected he might get to grab it before the reel is back in freespool? other then that i think i like the idea of prospecting with the flatline and then replacing the flat with the pitch (flatline is already out there so it will get further back in the spread to where the fish were faster). Im gonna need a 15 person crew this year and a dozen more dink rods

PEACH-BITE PEACH-BITE PEACH-BITE spelled Pitchbait. Thats my opinion for what its worth. Rhodekill is right about teaser being gone before bait gets there. About half the time when this happens if the bait is left in the same spot where the teaser was a fish will come to it - Maybe the same fish or maybe the next in line. I like Bert's idea of two baits for every teaser(Kind of Like two girls for every guy) The inside information I have tells me that there are only four baits in water and three or four teasers. There is a pitchbait ready in each corner. There are only three anglers. More than three sailfish is a mess on twenty pound tackle. The Monkey Business is turning to keep Teaser being attacked and right long teaser in clear water. The Best Shot I see for a triple is all on port side and it goes like this- Pitchbait takes teaser fish- Flat line gets looked at next. Stand by ready on right outrigger.
For what it is worth.
Thanks for coming fishing Bill.
Lets do it all wrong next time?

If I remember correctly the fish was finally caught on the righ long. At least thats the way it looks on my camera sequence. What a great trip Jody. I really enjoyed the fishing as well as the hospitality of the Buenavista staff. Your crew puts on a hell of a show. Can't wait for the next trip. Standby for a write up on the country and the fishing.

Bill
