    Mahi Sushi

Why don't you ever see Mahi on the sushi menus. We caught a nice 35lber on the tunabite last week. Roy our mate cut it up on the spot and we set it in the ice for an hour added wasabi and soy and had a feast. It was awesome. We also caught one last year on the release and the mates did the same thing and added thin slices of onions and served it as our appetizers before lunch. Unbelievable how good it was. So with the abundance of dolphin worldwide I don't understand why mahi isn't sold as sushi in the resturants.

    Good lord no man! LOL

Bad bad bad idea. They are LOADED with worms and parasites. I've filetted more than a few of them up in my day and the good majority had lots of little "critters" in the meat. I've actually seen the little suckers moving around on the cutting table post-op.

    Best cook them first.

You mess with those Jersey girls and your worried about fish poisoning? No way Mahi parasites can live through the stomach acid and alchohol bath inflicted on them immediately after being devoured.
Bill, I'm gonna quit putting them in the microwave on the ride home.

    LMAO! Alcohol bath hahahah.

I dunno man. If you can get parasites from salmon that's been flash frozen THEN thawed I would definitely think you could get them from fresh mahi.

That's what I was going to say. They scavenge more than any other pelagic (besides blue sharks) that I know. I've cut them open and found the strangest things:

    Pufferfish
    Triggerfish
    Crabs
    Shrimp
    Squid
    Flounder
    Seabass

Garbage included but not limited too:

    Pieces of balloons
    Bread bag plastic closures
    Misc crap from bilges

Hell up here in the NE we find them under bilge lines from ships on calm days. You know what "bilge discharge" includes right?

I mean they literally eat human excrement

I was told that mahi are susceptible to cause scombroid poisoning if they are not quickly and continuously iced. I have had the boat versions of mahi sushi many times and it is a great tasting raw fish (I really like the fresh onion addition) but have never seen it on a sushi menu. Maybe this is why...

Actually, I don't know how this slipped my mind. Couple years ago I ran as a mate on a 58' Viking out of Brielle NJ. The charter was hell bent on mahi. In addition to boxing like 18 tuna, we boxed what had to be about 75 mahi.

I filetted all of them. I ended up with a skin infection (which Box has also had) from them. Not good lol

Don't think you could pay me to eat a mahi raw. They are pretty disgusting fish.
