    Lures as teasers

OK I just sealed my envelop with a check going to Catchemup charters in Ma for some 2 Roddy Hays Krakatoa and 2 Pipers. #12 and #16 per Cappy Say's recommendations. Now why am I posting this in the circle hook forum you may ask. Well, I learned a great bit when I was down in CR at the WBS fishing with my friend Howard on the Tuna Bite. I know I am a squid salesman but I go by the old saying "when in Rome". Howard prefers to troll plugs for his teasers. So I watched and learned. But after discussing lure presentation with Reel Fool and some other friends in Hawaii I have learned that you just can't rig em up and throw em over.

I don't plan on putting hooks in these lures. I will be using them as teasers to pitch circle hook naked ballyhoo's. So, when I get my package in the mail this week, what do I need to do to make these perform their best. How do I trim the skirts? Do you trim the short corners more then the long teaser? Do I add weigh or float on nothing? Give me some hints. Should I have ordered a second set of skirts for when I am back here and putting hooks in the them? I am sure I will think of a bunch more questions but this is a good start.

Also what about optimum speed consider typical quatemalan conditions?

    thanks

    Teasers

Bill, these are some good questions, I think the best answers are going to come when you get these things wet. I would be prepared to add or remove weight and adjust as you go. It doesn't take to long to make these adjustments while your fishin since your using them for teasers. Did Capt. Say give you any suggestions on riggin them before you pull them ? I am looking into the Legend Products myself for lures and teasers as well, and I'm very curious to hear how you make out with them. Looking forward to your report after your trip. Good Luck

    Bill,

As a general rule, keep all the skirts you have for teasers, Brad Philipps, for example, often puts three skirts in his Quick-Change lures - all the more "stuff' for the fish to chew on.

Those four lures you have bought should need no adjustment - they run pretty much at most speeds right up to high speed, in most weather, without adjustment. I'm not sure what leader Brad and those guys down there use, but if it was me I'd be running them on 130lb line and with a 3' length of 300 down the bottom end - but I could be wrong !

To rig them, simply run leader throught the lure, shoulder, rubber lock-tube and then crimp, put end back through crimp and squeeze tight. Pull on the leader to cinch the crimp back into the lock-tube and you'll be good to trot. Check with the deckies on your boat first, but that would be my go.

    Teaser riggin

Roddy, where does the 130lb come into play here, I put 4' of 300lb through the lure and loop and crimp like you explained but I don't understand the connection to the 130lb ?

130lb string is your reel line - this lets you put plenty of pressure on the teaser to get it away from the fish and even yank it out of their mouth. As a last resort, you can even wrap 130 if needs be with bare hands. Similiarly, you'll find the boat's teaser reels will most likely have 300lb or similiar on them for the same reason. For the bridge teasers this is almost mandatory because some of the time the operator will be pulling the teaser in by hand, not by the reel, and the thicker the line the less chance they have of serious damage if they get wound up in it.

The 130 line will go to a snap or swivel, and that'll be attached to the three feet or so of 400lb mono to the teaser (if you think blues might be around), or less if you're just in sail-fish country.

That's just one way of doing it !

    Hope this helps !

Gotcha Capt. I load my teasers with 400lb mono, I've never used anything as small as 130lb on the teaser reels , makes sense now Thanks

Not only that, 400# test can put a hell of a bend and bust the crap out of an outrigger is he doesn't let go.

No, but I don't have expensive teaser reels and I don't trust the drags on the senators that live in the eliments 24/7.

I generally use 150# for my teaser line, except for the dredge. I run that from a downrigger with 400# braid. The dredge baits are on 60# mono.
