Thanks! That tournament was a lot of fun we ended up with a day 3 stripey and 4 sails including a double with an hour left.. 5100 total points and I believe dragin fly ended with 4200 points. Christen kept us on the fish the entire time and andy proved he is much more then a nj flounder pounder, much fun had by all with some great entertainment from jordan aka lil buddy

dave i was looking forward to stopping by and seeing you on the dock unfortunatley i never got over to that side, hope all is well. That is a fun fishery down there.

BUT.. the sobering issue is the ever increasing LL fleet. day 3 we saw atleast 6 sails freshly hooked jumping on the longline and another 2 or 3 floating along with the sets dead.. its ashame.

As conservation minded as Costa Rica is, I am amazed that something has not been done with it. Longlining can absolutely ruin the sport fishing they have there. Costa Rica has built its national product, tourism, off of sport fishing and when the fishing slows down because of long lining, the sport fishing aspect of the tourism will drop off, then they will do something about it, but it will be too late.

Unfortunately longlining is an issue that goes much deeper. There are two fronts here.

The first is that these are usually not the big factory longliners but small "artesanal" boats. The argument there is that these are local fishermen catching fish to feed the local people, and Costa Rica is still a poor country with lots of hungry mouths to feed. While I dislike longlining as much or more than the next person, it's hypocritical to say that sailfish are more important than humans.

The second is that there has not been a recent socio-economic study done in regard to sportfishing. At the end of the day, the commercial fishermen can say they caught and sold X number of fish for Y dollars. Everyone can point to a marina full of boats in Los Suenos and elsewhere and say, "Look how much sportfishing brings in," but without a firm number (which you get from a science-based socio-economic study), all you have is "anecdotal evidence," which isn't worth much. The commericals win every time.

The good news is that TBF is almost finished with a very good socio-economic study that pinpoints the true impact of sportfishing in the country. They are also working with IGFA to ban the export of Pacific billfish to make sure that fish caught in Costa Rica stays in Costa Rica, instead of being sold for more money to the overseas and US markets.
