How long does the hook stay in the billfish

The assault weapon caught a sailfish in isla mujeres, mexico that was tagged by the charter boat qualifier three days prior. The mate said he thought there was was no sign of a hook in the sail's mouth according to the post I read. I have personally caught 3 tagged sails and one that was tagged in florida was caught two days prior. So I guess the question is what is your opinion on the effects of circle hooks on the life cycle of a billfish after being caught and cut off by a circle hook. I have not read any data on this except for a few articles I have seen on here.

Bill you bring up some interesting points here. I for one am still not convinced that circle hooks are the "answer to all" when it comes to fishing.

I think that "J" will come out faster than circles will, just how they are made. I have also read a couple of things on how the circle "may" cause "jaw lock", either open or shut, because of where they get set. Plane and simple, it is to "new", use wise, to really know and with no one wanting spend money to study the effects of anything today, not sure we will ever know.

On my inshore fishing, I really like using Kale or "wide gap shiner" hooks on the stripers and small puppy drum. I have seen the hooks come out of these fish in a matter of hours. My clients also gut hook less with these than with circles, just what I see.

One more thing on what I see. I am amassed at how a fish can pass a "J" hook. It seems that once or twice a year that I see a fish that passes a hook and it is hanging out their anal vent, where it is easy to remove.

moverII do u really have room to talk

i personally dont think they can stay in the fish very long, when it comes to an 7/0 or 8/0 circle hook we use for white marlins. look at the hooks after a few hours of fishing they are already showing signs of deterioration, due to contact with salt water. if you look closely the areas of the hook that show the most significant signs of wear are the laser point and the barb once the barb is gone chances are the hook is going to fall out. after a day in a fishes mouth submerged in salt water, i dont think the hook has much of a chance. with all the moving a fish does over the course of a day, id say less then a day and a half.
