Just for giggles I will take a Eagle Claw 2004EL, similar VMC and owner and put em in the pond for a day and take some pictures just to see if they react differently then salt water. Shoot, the nitrates from all the chicken and horse crap run-off here on the shore will probably dissolve them

Bill those are the hooks you sent me right, that's what I'm using for my research and that's not fair because we don't have chicken shit or horse turds at the marina, I'm callin foul

2hours 15 Minutes... no rust yet... Will be interested to see how long it takes to get shank failure at which point a hook could then fall out... Also interested to see which ones give up first. My bet is that the 3407 goes longest... Thats a standard J hook for those not familiar... I'm thinking that 39951bln of theres though will be first to go. The thin wire owners get rusty in the pack on me and may be quick too. The slightly thicker owner 5379 I ddn't have any of here to try.
The mustad 39948z is too expensive along with the big Eagle Claws for me to sacrifice in this test...
Calcutta baits used to sell a mustad in the same shape as the 3407 that they called a "release hook"... Their tips were shot before the bally hoo were worn out but the heavy part shank and barb still stuck around for quite a while...

    Rust Tests

    Guys,

Here is a study I saw on TV that shows a long period before rust and incredible amounts of time before they actually discharged. They do point out that J hooks that are deep hooked should bever be removed, Although some these were not in seawater in a moving fish we may overestimate how quickly they rust out. There are alot of tests on line same conclusions 14-30 days before signifcant rust with no strength loss, some J hooks lasting 90 days. suprised the hell out of me.

Be sure to leave them in the water, oxygen will make them rust faster.

Maybe not even a fews weeks. Has anybody done any testing to really see how long it takes for a hook to rust out and break?

I know this isn't on a billfish but I've got a picture of a circle hook in a grouper that I caught this past fall. The hook was in the corner of his mouth and his skin/flesh had grown around back around it so bad that you could not get it out. (Believe me, I tried.) There were barnacles growing on the hook itself along with a trace of mono where he had broken off another guy sometime before. I realize that this is a thick wire Eagle Claw hook (looks like it anyway) but take a look at how little it had rusted....this made me rethink the whole "it'll rust out in a day or two" theory.
The thin wire hooks will rust very quickly. I just had to throw out a bunch of them from my boxes that had rusted badly.
    Just some food for thought...
