That fish was caught by Capt. Warren Sellers fishing with Tim Choate down there.
...why am I so curious about this rig....
trying to decode it.. leader ... crimp.. tape?.. leader .. lure..
what am I missing? stopping the lure to go up the leader?
I'm curious![]()
We did much of the early testing on that Piper and it is some kind of a very special lure. Due to some hydrodynamic factors that I am aware of, but that Roddy understands better than I, this lure trolls faster than any other conventional lure (not lead or metal, no in-line sinkers) that I have ever seen or fished with. It trolls great at "regular" lure trolling speeds, but what's special about it is that it trolls like a champ at 20 knots (and more) without running it way back there. Sticks in the water and only pops occasionally. It's one of those things that you have to see to believe!
I don't know about the rigging on the one in the picture, but I do know that when we trolled it down in Cabo, with it's big wahoos that had sweet teeth for fast moving lures, we ran short wire leaders to eliminate bite-offs. We did it all of the time, when trolling at the ten knots or so that I consider "regular" trolling speed, as well as when we were hauling ass. And no, we never noticed a reluctance by marlin to eat this or other lures with short, "tooth proof" leaders...and I saw most of them come in.
It isn't often that a truly innovative lure comes along. This is surely one of them. And on top of that, it has the "quick change" feature that allows you to replace skirts or change their color in a manner of seconds - without having to unrig the lure. That too, is something very special, indeed!
Congrats to Roddy, a true lure master.
Alas, dear Fred, 'tis not so true.
I'm just one of those Sigh. And I was trying so hard, too........I guess that leaves just you and a couple of others as true lure masters. By Marty's standards there obviously aren't too many original lure makers out there any more.
Funnily enough, I was having a conversation with Kiwi captain Marty Bates last week about this very lure. As well as using it with success in the Cape Verdes last year, Marty pointed out something else. In Panama late last year while crewing for Capt Bobby Brown and NZ angler Gary Carter, the guys found that the Piper was a great lure in a traditional 4-lure spread, but for the reason that it spent much of its time underwater and so became the real "odd-man" out. It doesn't happen so much with the 12 series, but the 16 and the 22 series Pipers really do "get on down" at almost any speed.
29 and counting![]()
Roddy I am gonna have to buy a couple more for the galapagos trip. I bought 4 from the crazy dude up in NE. Cant remember his name but he was some crazy full of energy captain that repped your lures. Anyways I made the mistake of taking them to guatemala after hearing of Brad's success raising fish with the piper and the Krakawhatchmacallit. It was a mistake because somehow they didn't make it back in the bag for the trip home. Capt Marciel said ummmm uhhhhhh - wahoo must of gotten them.Of course he said that with a wink knowing full well that they were now part of his arsenal.

Roddy,
I did not see those "a man who sells....stupid lure heads", or "knock off lure makers" comments and I truly hope that you are just joking around...not a very nice thing to do on your part if you did that, I might add. Not funny!
I hope that those comments were not made. I hope that for a lot of reasons that include how we should appreciate sponsors and after all of the comments made here lately about not doing exactly that sort of thing with new people or respected members. Name calling and insults are regrettable, if made.
And that's without appreciating the sponsorship in the first place, but on top of that, insulting highly respected members of the big game fishing community who come here to share their extensive and invaluable experience, and yes, including discussing innovative new products that they have developed (a discussion that Roddy did not start, by-the-way), is simply not good for the site and the members in general. The more of that kind of true, highly experienced expert that we can have join with us, the better, at least as far as I'm concerned, both from the things that we can learn from them and the prestige they bring to the site.
Jump on them? These guys don't get into Internet wars. They simply go away if that sort of thing happens. They aren't prima donna's, so don't have anything to prove to any of us here. So they just go away. And the true experts are a small and closeknit group. Word gets around, if you know what I mean. And the losers? Us and the site. No way to sugarcoat that. And again, that is our loss.
Captain Roddy Hayes has made his bones in the world of big game fishing and lure making for a long, long time now. He IS a master lure making innovator - not some copycat - and is a proven, awesome sea captain with an outstanding record in both areas. And he has been acknowledged as those things in the big game media and among other experts worldwide. As have some of the other truly great fishermen who share many others' opinions on his lures in general and this very special one in particular.
That includes men like such notables as Captain Tim Choate, Captain Bobby Brown, world class anglers like Marty Bates, Gary Carter, Warren Sellers, my respected competitor and fellow SFC'r Bill Pino, ("Crazy") Cappy Say and other top captains and anglers. I respect and admire the hell out of Roddy and am mighty glad that he is a member of this site.
Much ado, if the remarks quoted above were not made. I apologize for this rant if they weren't. And I repeat, I did not see them and dearly hope that they were not made and that Roddy was just fooling around.
If they were made, I am very sorry to know that and I wish that they had not been.
Until the facts are established, that's all that I have to say. Except to say again, that is one helluva an innovative, incredible new lure that you came up with, Roddy. And I know, because like the others mentioned above, I have fished with and and just about every other quality marlin lure and have been outright wowed by it.
Gotta admit it, though...it sure has a kinda silly sounding name, Rodski!
And like Babalaza, I'm still curious about whatever that is just in front of the lure. As I noted, in my case it was short single strand, 'cause there was no way I wanted some huge gator of a Cabo or La Paz wahoo snipping it off and taking it home with him! And, baby, those boogers hammer the hell out of it when you crank it up to 15 plus knots!
