Here's a general summer report of the latest action from Ecuador. The low season for anglers is a great time for deals, tuna fishing, bottom fishing and marlin in Manta.
San Cristobal, Galapagos.
The summer months are generally the coolest and this year has been no exception. Water temperatures on Rosa Blanca bank have remained 68-69 F on average. Water has been clear blue for the last week of August. The Big Fish has been the only boat out fishing lately. Captain Fernando Yepez has reported fantastic big eye tunas on Rosa Blanca with an average 5 to 15 bites a day from tunas form 15 to 80 lbs mostly. No sardines or squid have been reported. However the tunas or feasting on flying fish which have been plentiful. Marlin activity on Rosa Blanca has been very low. Indeed the strangest year so far in many and Galapagos has not been the exception. The bottom fishing has continued to hold strong with plenty of grouper, snapper and other bottom fish being caught with jigs and baits in 90 to 165 feet not far from port.
Manta, mainland Ecuador.
The beginning of June and early July showed for a tremendous hot bite going on certain days. Fishing has not been steady every week with some really slow weeks and other very good. Those fortunate enough to fish hot weeks have cashed in on blues, stripes and some blacks. Large tuna, big eyes mainly in 150 to 200# plus have been a bonus catch on some days. Last year the trend was similar staring a little spotty and then really taking off in August with September 2010 to January 2011 showing some of the best blue marlin fishing reported out of Manta in the last 10 years. Nevertheless the last 5 years have been very good with every year seeming to be getting better. http://www.ecuagringo.com/ info@ecuagringo.com
