the tournament season is winding down here in the mid-atlantic. I was not lucky enought to qualify for the World Billfish Series Championship this year but for all those that did quailify I suggest you guys sign up and fish the WBS Championship in Los Suenos in Dec. This is an incredible angler oriented tournament held in one of the best destinations in the world.
The format is a two day qualifier where two anglers share a boat. The anglers alternate sides every hour. You are allowed two rods and two teaser each along with a pitch bait. Mates cannot touch a rod. Once an angler is hooked up then the other angler had 1 minute to hook up. if no other fish is hooked then the angler must pull his line. If both anglers are hooked up then the first angler hooked has the priority to get his fish first. It gets really interesting when either both anglers are hooked up or one angler has hooked two up. This tournament really tests the merit of the angler.
The top 5 anglers fish a 1 day final for the honor of being crowned top billfisherman and wins a mercedes along with a lifetime exemption to the wbs champions and a bunch of other great prizes.
I have fished this tournament the last 3 years and will miss be part of the mix this year. It has become my favorite tournament to fish. Last year I barely missed qualifying for the championship but my boat mate angler, Tim Hake qualified to fish the championship. The billfish turned on full force on the last day and it was a sight to see. The first fish raised was a double stripey in which Tim got 1 out of the 2. From that point on it was pure mayhem. We had triples and quads come in for the next 2 hours. Watching Tim negotiate a triple all by himself was surely a sight to see. By mid day tim was in second place to Local mate Mainor Oporto. As the day wore on Mainor caught fire as well as another angler from Florida. Tim held his own and stayed with the leaders with a total of 11 sailfish releases and 1 stripe marlin. As the day came to an end Tim finished a very respectable 3rd place.
Tournament director Sam White and his crew put on an amazing tournament with happy hours, dinners and a very fun awards ceremony. Not to mention this is all taking place at Los Suenos.
Check out the website to see if you have qualified. If you fished any of the WBS sanctioned tournaments then you have a chance to qualify automatically. You don't have to register to qualify. You may have received a letter stating that you qualified. If you would like to test your abilities with some of the best anglers in the world all then sign up for this great event.
Good Luck Tim and the rest of the qualifying anglers!!!!!!!!
