I'm interested in fishing in Venezuela to achieve a personal super slam, but I have to say more than anything I really enjoy pitch baiting blues on the North Drop in St Thomas. I can't get enough of the full moon bite there. Few places can match the consistency for planning trips, and there are a lot of nice sized blues 400-500+ in the mix along with the smaller males.

With everything going on over in Cape Verde, I may look into a trip there next season. As time goes on, I am more and more into big fish mode.

Cheap Airfares?

I must be lookin' in the wrong places regarding airfares. In the not too distant past however the world was our oyster. Having been to Costa Rica and Venezuela I ended up settling here in La Paz. Granted we don't have any bones or tarpon, but the inshore fishery for roosters, cuberas, amberjack and the offshore fishing for tuna, dorado, marlin (3 kinds), and sails is tough to beat within $500 (roundtrip) of LAX. Yes, I do run a fishing business down here, but that came after the decision that if I wanted to have world class fishing at my door step and live within a few hours of decent medical care, music stores, and root beer, it had to be here.

Of course my heart is in Isla. I have spent so much time down there, I love it. I love the people, the food, and the fishing is unlike anything I have ever seen before. If my wife would let me I would stay down there longer. I think the atlantic sail are much more finicky than the pacific, so I think you become a much better angler. It is billfish bootcamp. If you want to learn to hook bills on circle hooks that is where you go. And our 09 season is booking fast, if you want dates call now.

I love the variety you get in Venezuela. When I was there it was slow, but it was November and it got me out of North Carolina. Also I don't ever get to fight the fish so that was a nice change of pace. Luckily I am going back down on the 28th to fish on the Prime Time for 7 days. I hope to catch a personal slam, and we are definately trying for a super slam.

The trip to Cape Verde is already planed for the spring. Can't wait to go check it out.

Went to costa rica in the slow season and did two days insore, if you ask me that was slow too.

Wish list has many places. GBR, Panama, mabye Cabo when the bite is going off, Kona to catch a spear, New Zeland, Galapagos, Brazil, Canaries, Azores, Asention, Mediera, I would really like to go to some little know fishery and help put it on the map.

For me nothing gets my chest pounding like Chub Cay... I've done Venezuela, St. Thomas, Costa Rica, Mexico and so on... All nice but I just don't feel at "home" there... Even when I had my own boat in a couple of those places some how I just felt like a tourist... For me I have a need to be more a part of the game...

Chub is not for everyone. For many that try to fish it using standard tactics it probably will present itself as average to good. I've logged close to nine hundred days in that pocket and have come to learn its really in depth secrets. Its usually pretty good. I have only had one "off trip" there in thirty years. What keeps me comming back though are those really special days when it all comes together and we get twenty or more cracks at a mixed bag of white, sail and usually bigger blues...

You said "FAVORITE" fishing destination right?

I like going to different countries and all, but nothing beats the OBX in my opinion.

Nothing like spending a week or so fishing and hanging out from Ocracoke to Nags Head in the fall. You have endless possibilities for fishing from the surf and inshore, awesome bottom fishing, to several tuna species offshore. No crowds that time of year,no passports, and it's like you're in a different world anyway.

Favorite place---GBR. The holy grail of fishing. No place like it on the planet.

Dream location--Ascension Island & Cape Verde. Ascension has been called the Jurassic Park of blue marlin fishing.
working on getting a job there for next year.

I would like to get to Brazil for the sick spring bite too.

Whilst I can see where you guys are coming from and I would love to jump on a plane down to mexico especially with 2deg weather at home right now, in all the preceeding posts there was but one mention of little old New Zealand.

Home of the largest Striped Marlin in the WORLD ! ! !

Currently going OFF with 600lb + Blue Fin

Home of pleanty of 700lb + Blues and Blacks

Forget little Broadbill Swordfish come down our way for BEASTS

Yellow fin Tuna, Big Eye, Mahimahi, and HUGE Yellow Tail Kingfish, Bass and the list goes on.

Monetary Benefits Have a look at the NZD/USD Exchange Rate. Pretty darn cheep

How about some of the best Trout Fisheries in the world.

Why not come down and enter the big 3 comp. Land a Marlin, Stick a Wild Pig and land a nice big Rainbow Trout all in one Day.

I could go on and on. And the best thing is that our season runs pretty much December to June , so come down in your off season

Need to Go little old NZ just one a Gold medal

Love to see you guys down here some time ! ! ! ! !

Boat: Need more friends with boats!!!
Home Port: Southport
Best Catch: 150 lb Tarpon & 65 lb Dorado
Occupation: Insurance
My favorite all around country to fish has to be Costa Rica. Fishing is good and there are many things to do on lay days. I liked the town of Quepos but I found the fishing better out of Los Suenos. For a change you can't beat the Tarpon and Snook fishing out of the Rio Colorado. 125lb plus Tarpon on light tackle, not much better fight than that.

As far as numbers I think Guatemala is hands down the best place in the world. We caught so many sails that by lunch each day our arms were worn out. Plus the Dorado burgers on the boat was a great lunch.

I like Panama for the variety and the large marlin. Our group has fished there a couple of times and the fishing is hard to beat.

I did Ecuador a couple of years ago and the longliners and commercial boats have ruined it. We hope to add the Galapogos Islands to the list this winter. The reports of 30 whites a day sounds like a dream come true.

Bill,

If you have some info on Peru let me know. We are always looking at new places to fish. We shy away from the more commercialized locales since you miss a lot of the countries flavor when you go to the large resorts.

Thanks,
