Spanish Crew Wins Ernest Hemingway Int’l Marlin Fishing Tournament
HAVANA, Cuba, May 31 (acn) The crew of the Spanish yacht ‘El Pilar’ won the 60th Ernest Hemingway International Marlin Fishing Tournament that concluded over the weekend in Havana.

The second and third spots of the competition were for Russia’s DC 9 II yacht and for the Marlin XVIII yacht of Denmark, while Argentina and the United States placed fourth and fifth.


The Spanish crew included skipper Sergio Gonzalez, sailor Sergio Arturo Alvarez and fishermen Jose Luis Conde, Felipe Alvarez and Boris Marcelo Bartulin.


The event, which took place under the tag and release modality to protect the species, was attended by more than 130 fishermen from 19 countries. In all, 333 catches were made.


This year, the competition was dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the first and only meeting between the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, and American writer Ernest Hemingway.



The event takes place every year in honor of the Nobel laureate at the Hemingway Marina in Havana. It was first held in 1950 and it is the oldest of its type in the world.
