    Question Dredges, Outriggers, & Pulleys...

OK, I have the new boat and I am finally getting things dialed in the way I want them for the most part. Which now has me to the point of wanting to correctly rig my dredges.

For years we fished them right off the tips of dredge rods right off the boat which was fine (really the only way) to fish the Grady. But with the new rig, now I want them out further and need to rig them off the lower portion of my riggers. I know the most effective way to do this is to set up a pulley system to accomodate the weight, and the tension the electric reels put on your riggers. I can not find diagrams or instructions on how to properly set this up anywhere on the interweb. I walked Sunset over the weekend and saw what looked like about a dozen plus ways to do it, but really need some guidance or a diagram or something. It just appears a little more complicated than me looking at a couple of set ups from the dock.

Can anyone here walk me through this set-up??? Or perhaps lead me to a site on the interweb with some instructions on how to do it???

All assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You first have to look at you prop wash when you troll. If you have a clean alley close to the boat you might want to think about just using long arm down riggers. Those double dredges out a hell of a lot of strain on the teaser reels and outriggers. I choose to run daisy chain ballyhoo's from the bridge teasers and the dredges off the down riggers.

I would also be interested to hear how other guys set it up so they can retreive the dredges without having to pull the power all the way back.

dont think it really matters to have dredges in "clear alleys" since, as u know, marlin fishing you are turning the boat alot, the dredges find clear water, it is never an issue. on the boat i fish, we have highspeed electric reels (tiagras) set up on dredge rods hooked up to the pulley system. the pulley system is definately the way to go. we always have a retrieval line so that when hooked up we can bring the pulley closer to the boat if the fish is hooked up on that side. we rarely have to pull dredge out of the water even when going backwards. The reels have a preset button so that you can drop the dredges back to the exact distance each time.

Do you have a pic of the pulley system. Do you ever have the problem of the line creeping down the riggers during the day?

the way the system is designed, we run the dredge rods and reels from the a rocket launcher in the cockpit. The line runs up to the bridge and out on a pulley. Hooked up on the outrigger is another pulley which you feed the clip through so the dredge doesnt creep at all.

c-duck should PM pitchbait, he will get you straight with the set up. he is on here.

snap swivel to the loop on the outrigger. the line goes from there, through a pulley (that is connected to your dredge) and to the electric reel. make sense?
