Eric,
I would use a cannon downrigger in the rod holder and point it at the pulley. It is the same as we fished in Venezuela ( only it was electric) and I have seen it on other boats as well. Just get the ones you crank in and put cord on them. I would think it would work fine. Just make sure the pulley is mouted so it can swivel around depending on the angle of the line coming in. Just a thought.
RT on the Hattitude had a similar set up, but I believe the fixed end of the haliard was on the bottom and the running end on top run through another pully on the top.

Bob,
I know a bunch of people use the downrigger setup but I am trying to set it up without having to dedicate a rod holder and gunwhale space to the downrigger. That electric 130 was sweet!
I am thinking more and more a nylon rope setup with a snubber or cleat could be a simple way to get it in and out of the way quickly. Wouldn't work with a double mullet dredge though!!
Bert, you lost me there!
Your diagram shows the haliard running from the real through a ring or pully near the bottom of the outrigger pole through the pully and fixed furthe up the pole.
The system I am talking about goes from the reel (which is on the bridge) to a ring(or pully) 1/2way up the pole then through the pully and fixed to a position low on the pole. In other words, the reverse of your diagram. This allows the dredge to ride further away from the boat.

Thanks for the clarification Bert. I get it now. I may end up getting a downrigger to crank it in but just mount it forward on the gunwale and run it through a pulley on the rigger so I can hang it. How about this?
It looks to me like this is going to be far enough out on the rigger to keep it away from the boat however it also looks like now it's out of reach unless you bring the riggers in. Are you able to reach it to change it out? Maybe grab it with a gaf?
