    Costa Rigging Technique

Here are a couple of shots of how one of our mates rigged up his ballyhoo. We fished on a couple of different boats and all the mates rigged them a little diffferently, but they all used floss. We had a pretty good hook up ratio with these and they all swam great. All the mates used chin weights and size 7/0 circles. They rigged them pretty quick but they rig ALOT of them. Hope this helps.

How about the circle hook with the loop not snelled. That is new to me. I seen a post earlyer this month that said if you take a hook with a crimped loop and pull it out of a bucket then take a snelled hook and pull it out of the bucket the crimped one catches the side of the bucket more frequently. There could be something to this. Mr Pino tell is what you know, we need to get the R and D team on this.

I have seen the same thing with the circle hook coming across your hand. The snelled seems to catch your hand better. the one thing I noticed here and something Howard's mate on the tunabite does is to make sure that hook is not in-line with the head but rather pointing to the outside. So you need to make sure you bait box is in order. the righ rigger bait has the opening of the hook towards the right and the left rigger bait has the opening to the left.

Notice the difference between pics here and it may make more sense

I prefer the hook to be snelled like the top pic but the hook to be positioned like the bottom pic. Of all the ways we have been taught that seem to give up the best results.

So long as this is the end result

Bill it is easyer to do that if you take the hook and instead of inserting it under the floss from the ballys bill to the tail if you go in one side of the x and out the other.

I tie a uni, leaving a loop at the hook, or I crimp, again leaving a loop. I don't snell. it's quicker my way & have had an excellent hook up ratio.

Here in the frozen tundra of New Jersey we have all winter to tie rigs. So far I have a hundred. I plan to have five hundred by June. One use and then they are in the garbage. Im looking for most effective since I have six months I dont care how long it takes. Im going to have to investigate this crimp thing. Thanks for the feed back. What size and brand hooks are you using and what pound leader?

I like to get away with the biggest hook, the most steal that the fish will & can eat! I prefer the eagle claw L2004-EL I believe it is, 8/0 for sails, whitey, on 100 lbs mono. The eagle claw hooks are budget friendly, alot less $$ than Owner, Mustad, Gamakatsu.
