I'm wondering what the circumstances and what size set ups the failed hooks came on.

It seems to me that a dink rod with8 #s of drag and a 60# leader couldn't possably break or straighten a hook.

Of course I'm talking about fishing for whitey here.

[quote=Squidnation;385861]I have heard lots of stories of the eagle claw 8/0's breaking as well. It was also proven to me that the can spring as well. While in Venezuela we had a blue marlin pull the hook at the side of the boat and we all saw what happened. The hook obviously straightened out. When we retrieved the hook it was almost back to normal. Really looked like it sprung back.

Did the leader get touched? Sounds like a good way to release a fish to me.

yup - here is the fish jumping as the hook pulls.

I will have to dig up the picture of the hook

Well it didn't spring back as much as the one in Costa Rica but this was the hook

According to some of the California websites the Eagle Claw L2004 or is it L2005 (I think the two are very similar) in 10/0, 9/0 and even 8/0 sizes seem to be used quite frequently for "cow" yellowfin in the long range fishery - straight tied to 80-150 lb mono. They have had some instances of hook straightening but plenty of 200 lb class yellowfin have been caught on those hooks which would most of us would consider pretty light. However, in the long range fishery the fish are gaffed straight off the rod tip. Maybe the X factor in the hook springing open is the direct pull on the wire.

a 2004elf has a short lifespan when trolled. get rid of them every couple of hours- they rust quick. That probably leads to the breaking.

FWIW, I was using the 2004 ELF's chunking as soon as eagle claw started giving them out at tourneys. Caught many a bft and yft on them.

They are only slightly thinner than the Mustad 9175 6/0's that I previously used on dink baits. Never had a problem with them.
