Catch Report - Honokohau Marina, Kona Hawaii

How great and simple is this. I can never understand why more marinas or fishing centers don't do this. It is so simple and offers great information that would help people not only picking a charter boat but seeing whats biting. Congrats to the charterdesk at Honokohau Marina.

Another question - why doesn't the Oregon-Inlet fishing center show which boats are catching what. I never understood that.

Bill...............two things, way too many billfish killed on that board, 32 lb spearfish?......but that's what goes on there. Secondly, I think OIFC wants to create an image or atmosphere that does not differentiate between boats, ie..uniform charter fee for all boats. When you read their fishing reports they never state who was high hook, just the fleet had a good day. I think it's a one for all, all for one philosophy at OIFC

The fishing center never shows what boat is catching what because they book all boats equally throught their booking service. They pick the boat unless you have a specific boat in mind. When you go to their website, you can choose from all the boats on the left and read their individual reports, but if you book throught the center, they book the boat to keep it fair depending on the type of trip you want.

I agree about the dead billfish issue - I hate to see them killed as well. I understand from a couple of the locals that spearfish are incredible tablefair and no different then us killing a tuna for the table over here. People love to eat them.

I guess I knew why the OIFC does what it does but it sure would be nice to have a single source of information as to who the hot boats are. With today's charter prices there is never too much information. BTW - I wasn't knocking what they are charging. The Oregon Inlet and Hatteras Fleets are some of the fairest priced fleets on the market especially considering the comination of boats, fishery and talent.

Spearfish are awesome eating but even though they kill a share of billfish, they tag a whole lot more than what they used to.

Bill....wasn't criticizing charter rates at OIFC, I agree that they've kept them under control. i guess what I'm saying is that they are promoting the team (OIFC) rather than individuals.

    live baiting

the boats that are catching threshers are generally overnighting, not necessarily live baiting during the day. live baiting in Kona is not the norm, although we do catch fish live baiting year round. trolling is more productive in the winter, with more spearfish & stripeys around, with the blues mixed in as well. been some nice blues around the past 2 weeks. have not seen anything over 400 myself, but some nicer fish have been caught---trolling.
