Had pleasure of taking Jody and Susie Elswick along for rockfish on Wed 5/13 out of Solomons MD. Headed toward Hoopers Light and set out the 11 rod spread at about 6:45 AM. Nothing for first 45 minutes in flat calm seas near the tail end of the spring trophy run, when the purple head/white shad tandem goes off the planer board and Susie is up at bat. After some coaching and maneuvering she brought a 43 inch 32 lb rockfish to the boga grip. Talk about getting spoiled your first trip and first fish! In the next five hours we boated another 7 fish losing only one that came unbuttoned after a few cranks on the reel, so we were 8 for 9, which this time of the spring run is pretty good. Four of the 8 fish were over 40 inches, two of them were pre-spawn with sea lice on them. All but one fish hit the tandem lures so the bite was shallow as the bait was visible on top a good bit of the morning, so the fish enjoyed some chowing down before leaving town for the ocean. What a great weather day, light breezes out of the southeast all morning until we pulled lines just after noon, then it kicked up to SE 15 and the whitecaps were in our rear view mirror. I had an awesome time and was very happy I could host Jody and Susie since they were such great hosts at Buena Vista Lodge in Guatemala.
